Pixel art - just trying my hand @ it now, looks like soooo much fun! Program - Graphics Gale. I've experimented with the palette, tools...etc. Just one thing confuses me. How in green hell do I make the background TRANSPARENT. Is their a color replace option? Or that 'lil icon that says transparency...click it, and it apparently does nothing. :P Some help would be totally appreciated! ZooM!(flys away in noob fashion awaiting responses from behind a tree) +.lollypop.+ |

Graphic gale for some reason, as far as I know, never make a true transparent background where you would be able to to see a grid in the background. but it does allow the transparent areas (gifs and png's) make the background transparent in the frame pallet for when you save it. -------------  got game?

The way I make anything transparent in GraphicsGale is to make sure the transparency option is enabled, and the colour replacement is set to your background colour, in the layer opinions and then do the same in the 'frame' window (the little option button). That always seems to work for me, I'm not sure how well I explained that though :\ ------------- WARNING - This post may contain incredibly bad spelling. So, basically I need to make two frames, one of my origianl pixel art, copy it, and set a specific bg colour to transparency and make sure both trans. options are clicked? Then delete the first layer and leave the second w/ transparency. Should I set the color replacement to white, or would that disable me from adding hilights to my pixels...hence, they would become transparent too? What's a "safe" colour to use? Thanx so much for the help, guys. |

When saving the image the transparency color for the "layer" menu wont matter, only the choice you make for the "frame" will matter, no you dont have to make another layer then delete it. ------------- got game?

I actually figured it out, if you still care...
This option actually only works on 8-bit formatted pictures, which was the big reason why I couldn't find out how to get it to work. On your palette, the transparent color will be whatever color is the last available color in your palette. To figure this out, if you already have it as an 8-bit format, click on the little down arrow with the line under it, and select "Remove Unused Colors" (also unavailable unless pictures are in 8-bit format; detecting a pattern?). Then, in that same menu, select "Set Transparent Color to first Color. Immediately, in the Layer dockable window, the massive amount of white that used to be in your picture should change to match the last color in your palette. If you're in the RGB section of the color chooser, which should be a little tab at the bottom of the Palette dockable window, you can play with the different sliders and the background should dynamically change. If it does not, then you probably have your transparency enabled. In the Layer Dockable window, click on the Properties button. Then deselect the "Enabled" button, and click OK. This will allow you to save your picture with the transparency. Hope this helps... |
