So, I'm creating my game and I'm currently working on my art (mainly the protagonist). But I am unable to get a sprite sheet of the character that I think it satisfactory (to my standards), and the thing is, is that I'm making no progress on the actual game. All I have is the standing version of the character moving around along with a menu. I just feel like I can't move on until I have this sprite done.
Because I can't do this sprite, I end up just do little things on the standing version of character that don't need to be changed. (Not sure if you'd call this perfectionism)
I would just like some advice on what to do if you've had a similar problem to mine.

Snap out of it. Get to GUI, BGs, assets, storyline, dialog.

Think hard. Do you want the sprite of your main character to carry the game, or do you want the game as a whole to carry itself. Sound, environment, story, gameplay are what's going to matter as a whole. It's going to be the overall feeling that will capture your audience. Make sure all of these blend together, and shift your focus off of the main character.

The player sprites are one of the most important parts of development, as far as I'm concerned. It's what the player will be seeing most of the time, and it will dictate how moving around plays and feels, which is a big part of the game. It really urks me when a game lacks attention in this regard.
That being said, there's no reason why you can't work on other sprites in the meantime. If you aren't satisfied with the sprite now, come back to it in a few days after you've worked on other things for a while. When you come back to it you may have a new perspective on what you want to accomplish with them, or see what was bothering you.
But again, as far as I'm concerned, a week+ of working on player sprites and making them perfect is well worth it.
