Hi guys,
My name is Chris, and a few friends and I are working on developing a 16-bit RPG in the style of the SNES classics. Our main inspirations are Earthbound/Mother 3, but we grew up playing all of the amazing RPGs that the SNES had to offer: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasies, Secret of Mana. We don't have a company name yet (working on it), it's just a group of three of us - I am doing programming using the ImpactJS framework, a friend of mine is working on writing/game mechanics, and we've hooked up with a professional musician who is making the soundtrack and sound effects.
We want to give back to the community, and so we've begun developing a JavaScript-based browser RPG in a similar style. We're looking for an artist that would like to join our team and steer the direction of our design. This is an unpaid position (we're all just doing it as a labor of love), but you WILL receive equity from monetization strategies we might decide on (kickstarter, merchandise, etc.) - unofficially, we're thinking of releasing the whole thing for free online, selling mobile versions for iOS and Android, and releasing some merchandise if we believe that fans would be interested. As our artist, you would get a piece of that.
Basically, we need everything, art-wise. The plot is about 90% done, and we have really terrible sketches and storyboards. But we are looking for tiles for about 10-12 large areas, sprites for characters, enemies, and NPCs, items - all of it. I might be able to help after some basic work is done by modifying what you produce, but you would be our lead artist. There's no deadline to this, because we're all working on this part time in addition to our regular jobs.
The setting of the game is modern day in an alternate version of Earth, with a series of interesting locations around the world. We have areas of the game that take place in an arctic tundra, ancient jungle ruins, a city made entirely of skyscrapers, and even an area inspired by Akihabara in Tokyo. The game also includes smartphones, giant mechanical computers, 3D printers, vinyl toys, giant robot combat, and even a survival horror section.
Skills and traits we are looking for include:
Character Design
Map Design
Tile Making
Interface Design
A love of 16-bit RPGs
Earthbound fandom a plus
As I've mentioned, this is unpaid, but the artist will receive equity (which I am happy to discuss). Basically, this project is going to be for someone who is looking for ownership of the final product. We are open to all skill levels, especially if a person is truly excited at the idea of releasing a game of this sort online. We want to bring someone onto our team that is passionate and wants to make a epic-scale, Earthbound-inspired RPG. All of us are committed to the project and want to see it brought to completion. We're working together to try and do something that we think is cool.
