Guys, I can't pick out what to do, and even if I try, I fail.

Maybe you could try to give some examples of art you've tried?

Or even before that, I felt it really helped to look at pixel art up close. Find of your favorite pixel art, zoom in on it, and study how the pixels are placed. Start with simple things, then show us and we'll give you more advice. :)

Edit: As an example for something simple, don't bother with full character sprites or big forest scenes. I loved to do hair pixel art and I would edit hairstyles onto free to use sprites and stuff. You could just draw a little face and try starting with hair, or even with a little emoticon like Whatever sounds fun, I guess.
