Hi All,
Before I ask my question I just want to say how much respect I have developed for pixel art and pixel artists. I grew up on the Atari 2600 long before I ever played a 3D game. Somehow I lost my way and fell into strict observational painting and drawing which led to 3D modeling, then 3D game art and the pursuit of photo realism.
Also, This is my first post so it serves as a hello as well . I hope to become part of your community:)
I desperately want to develop my 2D skills as an aspiring Pixel artist. The question is should I learn the fundamentals of cartoon drawing first as I am so "stuck" in realistic character development.I have a hard time simplifying.
Thank you guys so much

Multitask! Learn pixelart and drawing fundementals at the same time. See cure's PA thread in the resource section if you haven't already.

Hey Jalonso,
Thank you for that, I'm on it. One question though, would you say the fundamentals of cartoon drawing would be appropriate ? I have done a tremendous amount of life drawing, academic figurative painting and such and want to become more "stylized" if you will . Thanks :)

Finding your own style is something only you can do. I think pixelart is perfect for practicing anatomy and other fundamentals because you are working in small areas with few colors and have to be precise about every single pixel. If you can get these in pixelart then its just scaling up for other artforms.
