Having been a fan of the Discworld comedy series of novels by Terry
Prachett for years i decided to embark upon the quest of creating my
own 2d rpg based in that universe.
The story is set in the great
(some would call it an inkstain) city of Ankh-Morpork. the games city
layout is being based around the design of the infamous Discworld Mud.
A map of its Ankh-Morpork can be found here.
http://home.elp.rr.com/discworldmud/maps.html - http://home.elp.rr.com/discworldmud/maps.html
As
you can see the city is very large and varied. And theres going to be
extensive interior and underground maps of the games own direction. The
background for the story is that a plague has caught the city and just
maybe you'll get involved in it all or maybe you'll find a hundred
other things to do. Maybe you'll join the Unseen University or perhaps
join the Watch. It's for you to decide.
The plan is to make this a true rpg with the chance to choose your name, race and the ability to join at least a dozen guilds.
I've
already begun to make a few maps, but i think the game has a much
better chance of making it off the shelf if i get a team together. So
here i am. You know a bit about the game's background and the plan for
it.
Now i'm looking for pixel artists (charactersets and
tilesets). At the moment i honestly couldn't say if it'll be
free or P2P (this would involve contacting Terry Prachett). But if it
does sell the money will be distributed equally. All 'discussed'
expenses for the project will be paid for by me.
Pertaining to the Forum Rules; there is no company name and once the project begins a professional web designer and a close friend has offered to involve themselves in the project by designing a site. I have also talked with the Production Head of 1D Productions (a group which makes 2d games) and they are interested in adopting the project once i have assembled a core team.
At the moment i'm simply planning to use RPG Maker XP but we'll see what this post turns up I hope to get replies soon. If you have a any questions don't hesitate to ask either here or at my email address: anu8is@gmail.com
Best Regards

how many tiles do you need, and how detailed do you need them? would you need pixeled shops and stores?

Hi Aiko, the project is still being set up but we would be looking at tilesets for the following: Sewers, Palace, Park, Town (this maybe around 3 tilesets, for the same city but as the city is the entire world map for the game you have different areas, slightly different styles), WorldMap. Those would be the main tilsets and the only ones we know we'll need right now. As for detail i'd want to have someone on board thats willing to do their best in relation to how much time they have to spare for the project and there with would need to be a large variety of building in most tilesets. So as you can see yes it is a large project so i can't expect this from just one or two pixel artists. I'd like to get at least for 4 tileset/sprit artists on the team.
Let me know if this answers your question or if you have any more and i'll answer as best as possible.

i'll help with the project where i can, but my schedule is hectic. give
me something small first (and preferably scenery, as i'm no character
artist) so you can see if i'm what you need for the game. :)

Ok well if you have MSN or Yahoo Messenger you can contact me on the following:

And my email address is: anu8is@gmail.com
As to a scenery piece, well Ankh-Morpork is the city the game is based in and is set in a medieval fantasy and is highly regarded as the smellist, filthiest place on the disc. It's said that you can even walk across the Ankh river in high summer, that is if you were born without a nose.
So for scenery have a go at some buildings or floor tilesets for Ankh-Morpork, its going to need a slightly filthy look (at least in the poorer districts) and granted we're able to get enough variety in buildingsets its going look like a patch quilt of some monsterous sort in eventual game. As a guideline for your buildings keep it in a tutor period mindset , high and narrow. Other than that let your artistic freedom rein.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or ideas.
--EDIT:--
Just a reminder to anyone else who comes across the topic, i am looking to organise a small team of artists so if you are interested and would enjoy the prospect of working with a team on this game then feel free to post here any questions you have.
