I'm sort of expanding on http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/82432.htm - a piece I recently submitted to my gallery. I got the urge to make some more characters n' junk. Here's what I've doodled in my very limited spare time. I'm using it as practice to develop my skills, and to become less stagnant. I'll keep updating this when I add more. I appreciate all feedback.
I wasn't sure about the old man's hair. Either to leave it one solid color or attempt some detail. It's one of those things I'm not really good at much like the detail on the tree.

Pretty cool designs you got there.
For the old mans hair I think a touch of shading would do.
Just enough to suggest lighting and shape ya know? Little as possible imo

They look nice. I agree some simple shading on the old man's hair similar to the way you've shaded the brown hat is all you need.
Imo, the tree is over colored/pixelled as it relates to the style on the character but its a good pixelling job.

Well I tried something simple after having a wonderful nap.

I'm just not sure about it. I spent an hour and a half attempting to shade his hair. I'm still not satisfied with it. I just can't seem to do it the way I imagine it. heh Also made a few tiny edits to the face.

Think Huey from Boondocks IMO though this shading doesn't look bad.
Nice face edit btw oh and I agree about the tree like Jal said
Oh and IMO eyebrows seem to get pretty light even for full gray haired folks. Maybe add in a touch of lighter color to his brows to add some depth? I'm curious to how it will change his face

I don't like that hair shading. Bottom up is probably nicer.

Tried to do another shading for the hair. I also lightened up the eyebrows which feels like it gave him a lil' more age.
I'm still not feeling the hair. I'll keep at it. I just can't get a good flow going. I can't really add the shading like it should be.

You're almost there I think!
It looks good to me but you have to be happy with it.
Here is a tiny idea just to throw out there.
Seeing that he is standing still, I believe it would be very believable if his hand or even hands were resting atop his walking cane? Most elderly will do so to brace themselves.

I may never be happy with it, but that's just me. Working on the old man and explorer has really helped me to be honest. Any who, I messed around again. I'm not feeling the left arm, but I've tried editing it several times now and ended up making it worse each time. Also added a chest grab to the right sprite. I think I'm going to take a break for the day, and start again tomorrow. This is helpful practice.
I really appreciate your feedback H|F and Jalanso.

I haven't had much free time, but here's what I was messing with. I was thinking of doing a paper mario like game in a zelda world. I'm still fiddling with this stuff when I get some free time.
<--- Totally didn't notice what I did to his left arm.
<--- Quick edit

Got a tiny bit of free time.
Slight update:
-->
I'm still wracking my head over him. Not sure how to go about the legs while keeping it in the chibi/cartoony-like style. I played with the arms for quite some time, but I'm still not satisfied. Might change the pose/redo the body altogether.
Edit: Here's an update.

He's borderline "lumberjack" and I think you should just go for it lol
