Hunter Russels pixelart is quite neat & he seems really skilled - but his attitude towards clients is absolutly inappropriate. Just thought I'd write a quick review of this person's customer service I received...

I have small project I was looking for a pixel artist to pay for some pixel art, and I liked the style of his art, so I thought I'd send Hunter Russell an email with the dimensions and quantity of pixels required, just to inquire about the cost of project and if it would be viable to me...

I heard no word at all from him, and thought that maybe it was due to him being busy, which I can understand... I myself run a small jewelry business by myself, so I understand being self-employed...

I checked this afternoon, and found that Russell had indeed received my email, but decided to instead post it on his blog, which you can find above in his links, along with other unfortunate people who decided to inquire about his art... Russell then goes on to slander me for using the phrase "bud", and makes assumptions about my personality calling me:

A Demanding and Controlling client?.... After a single email

After His Slander, Russell then tells people how he is a professional.... Nice one Russell!

Small Businesses beware, Inquiries are not welcomed...


Well, everyone makes mistakes - but it seems his attitude hasn't changed in a year. im going through probably the last emails about working together that i will get and whispering "you are all awful sh*tnerds go away"

I feel like I should take the time to comment on this since I've apparently got someone who REALLY doesn't want me to get work :)

(I will admit that I cleared out the old thread because I wanted to avoid saying anything on the subject)

The first instance in that post as part of an essay I made on my tumblr about how to properly send job offers to artists. People, extremely often, send emails that are one sentence long and devoid of any real information about their game. I understand this may be because you want to avoid wasting an artist's time, but not explaining anything right off the bat wastes more time if anything! I made sure to erase names in the post and no one was singled out in a way that put them in danger - that person just found it necessary to blow what had happened out of proportion because they recognized an email that they had sent.

The only part of the entire thing that referred to him specifically was this:
And no one wants to work with someone who continually give them nicknames like “bud”
just
don’t call anyone you plan on giving money to “bud”
in fact don’t call anyone bud, at all, ever.

“But Hunter! But Hunter! I’m just trying to be friendly”
You can and should be friendly to an artist. Don’t give them nicknames, it’s demeaning and paints you out to be a controlling and difficult to work with client.

Which I still believe is a valid thing to say! It's one thing to be friendly to your artist but referring to them as "bud" right away as opposed to.. you know, their name strikes me as incredibly disrespectful!

As for the second part, I had put out an offer to do an unpaid collaboration on the side of contract work. The people I was referring (and making jokes about) in those tweets were people that had done any number of.. frankly hilarious things, in their offers to do unpaid(this is the important part) collaborations.

My favorites were:
1) demanding that I sign an incredibly long and incredibly beneficial-to-the-programmer-exclusively contract. on an unpaid project
2) demanding that I work full time, on an unpaid collaboration, because I need to "put [my] soul into a project like this, regardless of whether there is money involved"
3) work on a smaller project first, to build up trust (which is understandable) but sign an NDA on the smaller project and a contract stating that I do not own any rights to the art that I am creating for this project

The people I'm making fun of publicly are gigantic dorks, basically. I joke about people who do not respect artists - people who devalue the work that we do because it's not algorithmic or something they understand in the slightest

If you are professional and you treat artists with respect you can absolutely be sure that I will do the same for you.
