I have a 1080p screen, and I was getting annoyed at the limited display area for pixel art in the gallery. So I made a small Greasemonkey user script for making the display area in the gallery wider. I thought others might want to use it so http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/408004 - here it is. (You need Greasemonkey for Firefox, it should work without anything extra in chrome)
Use the "." key to toggle between full width and normal width. When in full width it pushes comments and stuff to the left side of the page. It still doesn't provide a scroll bar for when the image is too wide for the screen though.
edit: Chrome wont let you install extensions directly from another site, and it's a royal pain in the canvass to change the setting.
here's how to install it in chrome: click the install button like normal. Once it's done downloading it will say you can't install it (spoilsport). Click on the menu and open up the settings tab. Click on "Extensions" to go to the extensions pane. Drag the downloaded file from the download bar at the bottom onto the extensions pane. Profit.
