Balcony.PNG

I've been working on this on and off for a half hour, and I'm working on the floor texture. I'm aiming for a thatched look, but it looks more like a plaid square. Any suggestions, C&C?

there is no contrast on the walls, one should be lighter than the
other. floor is nice why not add it?

^With highlights^

With the ugly floor (IMO)

Choose and criticise!

Edit: 35 colors?!?! I'll fix that in a few. 22 of 'em are pre-added on the doors and their frames!

Edit2: Color reduction strikes! 11 Damage!

24 colors... and here it is!

I know it doesn't have to but I think the floor pattern would look better if it ran the same way as the floor as opposed to 45 degrees against it.

K, here's the iso floor to the best of my ability.

I'm still not very satisfied; I'm going to mess around with it a bit more later today.

instead of focusing on redoing the actual balcony, why not add something to it to spice it up? As it stands now, that balcony is empty and boring.

That's my next step, but I learned the hard way how bad it is to add floors last.  I'm adding a monkey in a chair with a foor on it and probably a tropical drink.

first doors look much better IMO. perhaps more than just a monkey,
what about other stuff. add umbrella fo sure.

maybe make that texture an area rug for one area, it's a bit overwhelming for the entire floor.

give it a cloth border and it can be a tropical beach mat!

I'm not sure if you minded, but I did a little bit of an edit.

I think it looks "thatched" but if I were you I'd use more contrasting colors to make it interesting and anti-alias the lines.

whoops :P I guess it does look plaidish now but... When I added more lines it just looked more checkerboardish. *shrug*

I always do floors and walls last. How do you know that your pressumably brown monkey will work with this floor pattern/color.

^^ I rather think doing the floors and walls last is a rather bad idea. Doing the minor aspects first and trying to work around them is like designing a really cool bow and trying to make an entire ballgown around it, wee bit backwards. It COULD work, but it'd be easier to do the detail work last.

I've been told by reputable artists the "proper" or recommended order is as follows...

composition/layout/concept first, do a few thumbnails, get the general idea in your head
then colour scheme, figure out a pallette
then background, setup the perspective and all that (although with iso thats a little moot)
then middleground
then foreground
and then detailling

makes logical sense...

...well, I am an artist of ill-repute . I hope this thread does not go all off-topic, but to Saiklor I say this. If you create art using logic then you'll only ever be a great technician.
