Some of you may already know Hayo Van Reek, personally I think he is an amazing artist. He has recently created an online portfolio that just takes my breath away. http://www.hayovanreek.nl - http://www.hayovanreek.nl - have a look at the art section and there is loads of pixel art. What do you think of it? - maybe he should write a tutorial or something

that site is nothing to write home about, a bit bland. he has a few
nice pieces in there, but nothing that takes my breath away.
btw this should be moved to diversions.

why dont you direct him here, so he can join our community and get
critique on his work. Why dont you start pixelling/show us some of
your work?

I do pixel a little but i havn't done so for some time

might have some trouble seeing it on a low-contrast monitor lol (its also a bit pillow shaded in places ICK, but like I said: I did it some time ago, the lineart is good, but I don't like the back leg, its too short)
Can't say the welcome has been too nice here, why would I recommend it? I guess I set myself up for it.

I actually agree my site is not something to write home about...tis
just my portfolio for the art academy I am on, and my pixelart is
pretty mediocre compared to the great stuff here. Maybe I will hang around and try to get better at it.

I don't think people thought of this thread as a welcome thread for you, they were commenting on the topic at hand. We're all lovely really... ^_^
Welcome to both of you!

Well I think your work is something to talk about hayo, it might not be amazing in its detail or number of colours (the bernard and hank stuff anyway) but it suits its application perfectly. Really I see no point in pixel art unless your creation is going to serve a purpose, the dragon was more of a dither practice than anything useful, but still pointless I guess if all you want is fine details then it becomes less useful to any application other than its pretty to look at. Thats a lot of time to spend on something so unrewarding. That may be a little unfair because people do get a lot of satisfaction from creating a good piece of art but then it becomes a showing off contest in many cases which I hate with a passion. I feel being able to apply pixel art for a specific task is more rewarding and should be highlighted more in critiques than it has done in the past.
Thanks for the welcome, hope that was more of an official (yet contraversial) introduction

Pixel art should serve a purpose? l'art pour l'art?

art for art is the most important thing on this forum i think. it's more fun to make lots of varied things then 2 dozens of sprite sheets.

Most of my pixelart is graphics for some kind of game project. Game creation gives me enough motives to pixel. Too bad that almost nothing is in game yet...

Pixel art is fun even when its for a job. I'm booked solid and still take
a break daily to make my own stuff.

I seem to be doing at least one piece a day now [even if they are small]. I'm starting to get into freelancing, it doesn't seem to have the appeal as creating something from nothing, but it doesn't seem like it could be too bad, besides. pixels never get old :)
