client asked me to do quite a bit of speculative work with no mention of pay or the rights to the artwork. tread lightly with this one.

They've also pretty much spammed a couple of art forums with more than one type of job offer, also they won't answer questions about the company, which is never a good sign.
They have two topics here on Pixel joint, along with a further four on Wayofthepixel. http://wayofthepixel.net/index.php?PHPSESSID=683c52e808f6b06e43bbf86c5de08ce3&topic=16623.0
I'm not suggesting that they're dodgy, just be careful. Having a logo doesn't always mean someone is legit.

Your reply doesn't address my concerns. It's poor business practices to ask for unpaid spec work with no mention of the rights to the artwork, and it shows you don't respect the artist or value the work involved.

I remember Vexel Studios when they sent me an offer to join them. I declined for not having to time, and I have nothing more against them. However, a friend of mine, who doesn't do pixel art professionally, got a message from you and asked me if I knew anything about you guys, so I poked around the internet.
One major suggestion though:
You do not just reassure people they will get paid. Set it in stone in a contract to make sure that both parties benefit. If terms are vague, that is probably a major red flag that you intend to scam people.
Make terms very clear about the rights of the work. This is more of an issue for Vexel Studios, but ignore this completely, artists can choose to kill your project when the copyright still belongs to them.
I once had very bad experiences with signing a contract that basically shoots myself in the foot. (Especially be careful of contracts which you agree to forever never hold a business liable for damages).
EDIT: Found this... interesting...
