Are the visuals in Yoshi's Island Pixel Art? cause they are said to be crayon-like
but they still look pixelish. And if you don't know what Yoshi's Island is here's a wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshis_Island - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshi%27s_Island

Pixelart.
Zoom in and its all controlled.
Ignore 'what it looks like'.

Yes I thought so, so I can make pixel art that looks like a lot of stuff?
Is Kirby's Dreamland 3's Visuals also pixel art? I presume so ignore what it looks like.

Pixelart is about control on the pixel level only.
The style or look is irrelevant.

I don't think so. The background on the linked image is quite obviously made using large brushes with overlay effects, and Dreamland 3 looks like it used filters to create texture and then just colorreduce it.

In Yoshi's island the sprites are very neat, and those in Dreamland too, to a degree the ones in DL3. But the environment in the games feel like the artists haven't taken control of all the pixels. There's just a lot of messy edges and so on, and a complete lack of AA.

It seems an efficient style, fairly fast to make and with an unique aesthetic, but pixel art as an artistic concept wasn't around then, so it's just production art under pressure and restrictions; technique doesn't matter, time and results do.

You can argue it's pixel art, just rather sloppy, and then I'd ask - should we strive for sloppy?

Do we have links to actual art? I just saw the one on the wiki page.

I was talking about this screenshot for Yoshi's Island:

And something like this one for Dreamland:

edit - the forum apparently has issues with me embedding random images from the internet, so I threw them in dropbox. I think the issue it's trying to sanitize URLs containing things like %20 for space and %27 for apostrophe.

I was speaking of the first image. That shows control even if the base was layer FX to start off, right?

The 2nd one I would not consider the BG and most tiles PA.

It's not so much FX as it is large brushes. The mountains look drawn with a 3 pixel brush, and then later they used a ~10 pixel brush to palette cycle the brown to green. I have no issue with the color cycling. I have an issue with using large brushes which make it impossible to control every pixel properly. For me, it's what distinguishes this work from 'proper' pixel art in the same manner that oekaki or one of my blob sketches isn't 'proper' pixel art.

Wait what is Pixelkaki? You guys say that pixel art only became a discipline recently?
Does that mean the pixelart concept is quite new?
What video game graphics are the basis of modern pixel art?I don't know but it seems to be quite a complex math weather somethings pixel-art or not,But is it possible to make pixel art that has a similar effect to that of Yoshi's Island? Can you even get pixel art that has a rough look to it or does it all have to be smooth?
Like is this pixel-art? It's a "Yoshi's Island Rip Off": http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/57041.htm - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/57041.htm

What I'm saying that pixel artwork has been around relatively long because of necessity, but that the artistic concept of pixel art is something that came a bit later. Like, Space Invaders is pixel art, but at the time it was just art.

PixelSnader in the first post you made in this topic were you contradicting Jalonso's statement that what it looks like is irreverent,
or did you critically analylize the images and come up with the conclusion that the Visuals in Yoshi's Island are not pixel-art?

You say there are too many rough edges and the mountains were clearly done by brush strokes,
would The visuals in Yoshi's Island DS be considered pixel art It has a cleaner Graphical Style?
