Hi!

I really want to learn pixel art, but learning other art (drawing, painting), is also a dream of mine. I am wondering if practicing the pencil/other 'irl' mediums will help me with my pixel art quest as well. Thinking about pulling the form of an object, shading it in a realistic way, and overall understanding composition a bit better (intuitively).

Or is pixel art very different from "irl" art?

Thanks.

Pixel art still works by the same principles as other forms of art (especially if you're creating anything with human forms in it). Improving in non-pixel art will most certainly help you get better at pixel art.

Think of pixel art as a type of rendering technique for 2d art rather than separate from other types of art. One thing about pixel art is since it is bound to a grid you can get away with doing it with minimal hand control. But things like drawing do require a decent amount of hand control so you should practice drawing if you really want to get into drawing.
