this is probably going to take a little while as ive just started this and i have only one car and yet to make any background, the original pic was far too big which was started in ms paint and i added some cool stuff in psp to liven it up

i want to do quite an extensive work cause details are my thing,so how big should i make this,i was thinking along the lines of 600x200 pixels

here is the car

any comments are welcome

You've got nothing but gradients here. replace them with solid colors, dither, or be torn to shreds by the better pixel artists.

Your color count is excessive at best. If you don't believe me, http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/new_icons.asp?search=&dimo=%3E%3D&dim=10&colorso=%3C%3D&colors=8&tran=&anim=&iso=&av=&tee=&owner=&d=&dosearch=1&ob=search&action=search - look at what other people can do with 8 , about a 20th of your color count of 156.

It's waaaaay too plain.
Too much grey.

Also, you've got to STOP with the gradients.
Try putting in tiny details.

Too much consistancy is never good in art.

No. Unless you are using one of the worst programs imaginable, that's not why. I could understand .png darkening your image when shown on certain browsers, but adding colors on is your own doing in some other way.

By which I mean your gradients. They're really ugly, and just accentuate the fact that the car is so blocky and lacks details or any thought to add details. Especially where the flames are, why no form to the car? No car has a straight level hood like that. There's got to be some form to it somewhere. Those gradients are just killing your color count and the piece in general.

souly, ive just started the garage tonight so i have a lot of details to do

blick,i have thought about the hood and did take it down to 16 colors but it looked rubbish, and i use paint shop pro 7 by the way

ill see what i can do with the hood but at this stage i feel that some of you are being too critical, thanks for the comments though, keep them coming

Part of pixel art is trying to use as little colors as you can Dar, if you have that many colors, that don't even change the look of the care.
Why bother having them there?

I guess it no longer matters since you submitted to the gallery, thus
closing this post. As for the "i feel that some of you are being too
critical". Don't be sensitive, they are all very valid because they are
all meant to show you proper pixel art techniques which you seem to
be rather ignorant of at the moment. I don't think any deal with
creativity.

i did that last night jalonso to use as an avater, then i read the the biggest size was 64x64 which ruled it out

well,i know about pixel art,i studied it for like 2 years, anyway,i took the car down to 79 colors and lost the gradient on the grill and hood, and in my own opinion it looks far worse, itried putting some shape into the bonnet also,so you see,i am actually doing something here

Well at the risk of being snobbish, I graduated from the College of
MSPaint where I recieved an AA. Then to the University of Photoshop
where I graduated maga cum selout with a minor in ISO. But the
comment I have here is somewaht easy math. Your car has 79
colors your bkg over 10. How many colors do you estimate on this
garbarage scene once you have several cars and other things on
there?

I lowered it down to 14 colors.

I even gave the glass some flare by adding a higlight.

In pixel art, it's more of a discipline thing than a true neccessity, but because the artform originally came from 2- and 4-color systems, it is always best to use as few colors as possible. Also, using 156 colors is clear evidence that you're using tools or something worse. 256 colors was the limit for an entire game back i the day, and you use that many for one sprite? Somehow having this many colors seems like a waste now, doesn't it?

As for your friends, pixel-aethiests have invalid opinions of pixel art anyway, so take their advice with half a shaker of salt. Still, if you can color-reduce while keeping your general look, and that's what makes you happy, go for it, and then revise.

Dar, I'm curious to see your 16 color version. Pixel art is alll about conservation and working with limitations, one of the reasons I love to see it so much. other comments of mine being in the gallery. basically, give it more form than box + wheels. add some side mirrors, shiny chrome, I dunno, something that makes it look more than a gradient on wheels :p

I like the engine. I didn't think your 16 color version looked so bad, you've just got to learn how to manage colors more efficiently is all. to be honest just from the form of the car, I thought it was the back at first glance, looked like the trunk to me. way square in general.

If you dont like the 16 colour version, bump it up to 20 or so and it WILL look exactly the same as the other. I mean, i see only 2 or 3 extra colours needed.

I see little to no difference, use the 16 unless you're planning on cursing us to heck in that scenario.
