(Hopefully this sort of post is allowed, I'm really sorry if it isn't!)
Hi all, I've been interested in pixel art for years now but have never worked up the courage to try and make any of my own. I've read through a plethora of tutorials, both on PJ and elsewhere, and I finally feel "ready" (kind of) to try and make something.. the thing is, I'm not especially good at traditional drawing and in general I never know where to start when beginning any sort of project.
With that being said, I was wondering if anybody might be able to suggest a simple subject to try pixeling. (I know "simple" is rather subjective.) Any advice in general for a beginner would be appreciated too. :x

Might be more appropriate for the WIP forum.
Since you're not experienced with traditional art (and apparently have no interest in it), but you still need to know art theory stuff to be able to pixel well, I recommend doing colour and form exercises in pixel art. Still lives are the way it's often done in traditional art, and you could do something similar in pixel art, focusing more on the forms and largely ignoring the details and textures (at least for now).

Yeah I wasn't sure which forum to put this in.
And I mean, I draw a lot, I love traditional art! I didn't mean to sound as if I had no interest in it. I don't want to sound pompous but I went to art school for a few years so I know a fair amount of art theory, I just don't feel like I'm very good at it.

Focus on the theory if you're not comfortable with it. Pixel art is just another medium that uses it

Some things that can be interesting to pixel, and don't involve solid freehand or anatomy skills : - Fonts (try single-color at first) - Emoticons - Image designed for use as avatar, fitting a square like 50x50 (it's also an exercise of composition) - Logos (ex: Can you do a Batman logo in 32x16 pixels canvas ? Try with only 2 colors. And then second try with as many colors as you think are necessary) - Game tiles for fantasy characters and monsters, like these ones : http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/88609.htm - http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/88609.htm The flat view avoids need for perspective, it's an exercise of readability and symbolism.
