Hello there;

I am a newbie here to learn and fine tune the pixel arts and this is my first post:



So a little bit about the brain bot; This concept was referenced from Wild Wild West, starship troopers and wolfenstein.

In addition to the stats, this bot has the ability to shoot its hands to grab the foe and stick his needle in foe's head to suck his brains out.

Now I havent done this in like 15 years and currently started pixel arts again for game dev purposes. I will try my level best to fulfill this before the deadline.



This is the final version that I have submitted but as far as the general art work goes, CnC is welcome and appreciated.

EDIT: I did not do the animation because I am almost out of time.

I much prefer the sketch. The pixel version is rather hard to read, for example the arms being covered up by a leg (also, size/placement of elements seem to be different to the sketch) and the head is very much hidden too.

Technicall it's not too bad for a first go/after long hiatus, but I feel your materials are a bit too similar and flat. Work a bit more with highlights and contrast.

I agree. It's not cheating to use your cool concept as your base object. :D

Can you elaborate on that a bit more please?? I feel really newbie in pixel arts after seeing what was posted right before me. How can you use high res concept as your base object for pixel arts? Using Photoshop cs 5 ext and Pyxel Edit here.

I assume that they meant that the sketch has a more interesting pose and the side view don't fit the complexity of the robot. You could have scaled down your concept and made the pixel over it, overlaying.
That is a common cheat that professional use, the community here prefer to work from scratch to develop their technique. That probably what Iscalio meant with "cheating". Pixel art isn't different from classic art, you just need to understand the process and know more about colors and shapes.
Personally, I agree with PixelSnader.

I wasn't insinuating drawing over the sketch, actually. Just pointing out that some important elements that are well visible in the sketch, are obscured in the sprite.

Anyway, scaling down and colorreducing wouldn't be an issue - provided you use that as a base to build on. What is important is that you take control and hold responsibility over every last pixel in the endresult.

I was just insinuating that, assuming this is your concept piece, you can use it either directly (by scaling it down and pixeling over it) or indirectly (trying to keep a similar pose and proportions as you find most pleasing) to make a good final product.

Choosing to start your composition of the piece over, rotating it or changing how it faces, etc etc. Is a duplication of your effort. If you're going to do this I'd suggest ensuring you're doing it for a good reason. Like...your new pose is more interesting. Or you're fixing scale or proportion issues on the original concept.
