I've spent way more time developing PixelJoint than I ever thought I would, but it's a fun site to work on. Hopefully I'll get to a good stopping point in a few months.

You had paging working properly before then something happened. I can't see page 2+ in my gallery.
Another thing we need to have as admin is the ability to see all info regarding new pixels before approving them. Such as.. being able to see the full version, icon descriptions, etc

I'll fix the paging... not sure what got hosed there. The admin tool needs a lot of work still.

I'm not sure about this but there are mods out there (for other forums not sure about Web Wiz Forums) like store mod. So people can create their own galleries and sell their pixel art work (just some small stuff that they won't even use) for pixel money (not real money, just credits users will get through the bot by posting and stuff like that). It's probably not that necessary but just a suggestion

I think we have something that will be kind of like "money" on the site which will be awards for various silly things. Haven't had a chance to think it through yet. Artists can link directly to their pixeltees on the gallery site which will hopefully make some money for some pixel artists.

Plus we've already go the points system. Personally I think thats enough, anything else is just masturbation. Figuratively. Although it was worth suggesting Zoomrix.

Just noticed a bug: the statistics (pixel pieces mostly) sometimes say
a larger number than the actual pieces posted. Might be worth fixing.
|
Posted By: sedgemonkey

You are absolutely right about that bug Brian. When people post and then delete or have there works rejected the number isn't adjusted. I'll fix that soon, but for now I'll just run a script to resync the numbers.

One suggestion I have is a bit more less chaotic links section.
And maybe with a few more features, such as broken link reporting
and/or site content changed, I have run into a few old pixel sites that
have totally changed their format.
And since there are so many links there, maybe either a seperate page
for each category or maybe using some sort of script that will call
each section into the same page.
|
Posted By: sedgemonkey

Yeah, I've been putting off organizing the links section for awhile.

instead just export them to my server and start over with a clean
slate...

I think PixelJoint could have skinning support. Hell isn't it the
perfect site for it? And then just have like a template people could
download and build a skin with, and then they submit it somewhere and
an admin approves it to be added? I reckon that would be hella
cool.
|
Posted By: sedgemonkey
Date Posted: 21 July 2005 at 10:34pm
That would be cool. We are moving the site to a new design sometime soon. Maybe we can incorporate your skinning idea when we do that.

A zoom out function to the images too! Like when you right press the image zooms out..

Kankki if you're talking about the forums, just press shift + left-click
Anyway, talking of zoom, I'm probably just being really picky, but in the main gallery,
when you zoom in, the zoom buttons get pushed down the page by the
enlarged picture, and you have to scroll down in order to use the
buttons again. If they were above the picture, you could quickly zoom
in and out and the buttons would stay in the same place. Sorry if I'm
sounding too pedantic about it, it was just something I thought of.
|
Posted By: sedgemonkey
Date Posted: 01 August 2005 at 3:58pm
Way to go smart guy -- I had to look up what pedantic meant.
I think you definitely have a point with the zoom getting pushed around with the zoom function. I just can't get the zoom thing above the pic to look good. It looks like the art is wearing a hat. Any suggestions?

What about being able to create your own folders and sort your work in
your gallery, making it neater for people to browser your work and look
at similar stuff. That way you can group things in the order you want
instead of having similar things spread apart from the date they were
submitted.
|

Maybe do something like a link in a users profile leading to their gallery on the main site? Because I don't know how long I've spent looking for something that an artist made so I can just view the rest of his gallery, and still haven't found him Or maybe have a search option for searching an artist.
EDIT: Opps. I just read over the list and noticed that that idea is already on there. Silly me.

DarkAuron: I think I understand what you mean and I like it. We'll see what Sedge says.
Zoomrix: there's a "gallery" button just below each members post. Plus, a member can choose to add the link as their homepage in their profile. Also, you can search for a member by clicking the members button on the main site.

OH weird... Thanks PB.
Before when I clicked that button it seemed to go to my gallery. Sorry for the useless post.
EDIT: Well at least to make this post worthwhile I have a small suggestion. How about making the links in the link section have a tareget="_blank" because I still want to stay in Pixel Joint and view the link at the same time and sometimes I"m just lazy to right click > Open in new window...

how about a watch topic option, so u get an e-mail when someone posts
on the topic, unless there is one and i have missed it, but it would be
handy, it would keep people comeing back to check their threads
instead of what they do someties which is just post and never return, or
if theres a colab your waiting for people to do some things, or even in
here for you sedge so u can tell when someone has made a sugestion
without haveing 2 come on the forum to check.

formatted to the US month/day/year whereas in uk we have day/
month/year and it just confuses me. perhaps all people viewing in
the uk get the date formatted to their usual.

I just had an idea! i know this is possible on some sites, and should be
for pixel joint not shore tho. but when u chose your template for the site
could it be possible that there is an advanced option, and you can put
inthe hex values for what colour you want bits to be like text then a box
2 put in a hex value, then background and u can put in another value
for that then table bg then table headers links ect ect then mayb a
dropdown thing to chose the colour of the top pixlejoint image.
it would make the site much more custimisable for people who want a
pasiffic theme

Shark: I realize that the date/time thing is very specific to the Western US/Canada, but I haven't had time to add time offset code to the gallery site yet. I promise I will get to it someday.

Hi guys, I've searched in the board for this problem but couldn't find
anything: with Firefox (1.0.7) the zoom function doesn't work
correctly, the box with the pic gets higher but not wider, resulting
with the pic being cut (with big pics after one or two zooms it is
quite evident) and the scroll is not very friendly.
I find quite strange that nobody had this problem though (or was just me being not able to find the right topic?)...
Other than that, thanks to Sedgemonkey and the staff for this GREAT
site, I don't know how I missed it for so long (well, it wasn't very
polite to make the first post with a bug report only!)
Keep up the good pixel!

Forum software
I don't have time to invest in changing the forum software to something else, but it seems like dev on the Web Wiz software is starting again. Hopefully it will fix a lot of the cheesy features in this version.
Date display on the PJ gallery
I'll look into how much effort it will take to make the date format flexible.
Cropping in Firefox
Can you guys send me a screenshot of what is happening?
Zooming in Firefox
I've been thinking about making a special popup page just for pixel art that handles different bg color (to see how transparent things look), tiling (maybe iso tiling too) and zoom functions (partial and full). Having a popup page with just the pixel art and the tools would also eliminate trying to keep the rest of the site design intact when zooming.
Lineart
I will add a flag for lineart in the gallery just like the current transparent, animated, isometric flags. That way it's http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/new_icons.asp - easy to search for lineart .

for people to post only lineart cos the line art swap topic got
crowded. I think there should be a sub gallery of linearts just for

Don't remember if I mentioned this already, but have you considered using some CMS software out there in the Open Source areas? Version history management
(I don't know, if this has been suggested before, didn't find it yet, so here I go :)
As you know, some of us feel that their pieces (or at least certain of
them) are never like "finished". After I posted my first (and yet only)
pixel art here, I was already thinking about improving and extending
it. I thought: I'm gonna upload an updated version to the same
submission, expanding the comment something like "look, I did my
proposed changements, added some stuff..." but then you could'nt see
the first version anymore. What a pity.
Wouldn't it be nice, if one gallery entry itself already contained some kind of version history that you can click through?
Hope you get the point

Hmm.. i would feel that you could place the old version next to the new, in the detailed image part, if you wanted that. But yeah i spose it would be interesting.

@ Larwick: Assembling the versions yourself in one pic before uploading is an idea I didn't think about...
I think it may work well in some cases (small pictures), but not so well
on bigger ones. Moreover, I sometimes like to look at a piece only by
itself, without other stuff around it interfering the enjoyment, that
way you can have a clearer impression (know, what I mean?).
Besides, with a version history you could also post WIP/steps (for example to show, that
you did something nice from scratch). Of course, on the other hand,
there have to be made sensible restrictions to prevent the system from being be
abused and having tons of crap posted.

@Imagician: Version history would be very cool, but we'd have to put something in place so people don't abuse it. I've been thinking a lot lately about an "updated" gallery view where people can take a look at pieces that have been recently updated. Again, we'd have to build some tools to prevent people from abusing this. It's sad that we can't just build what we want -- everything has to built with a-holes in mind.
@MarioH2O: I used to have a palette counter for GIFs (maybe the code is still lying around somewhere), but it just returns the maximum amount specified so if you had a 32 color palette specified and only 5 colors were actually in the piece it would still show 32 colors. If you know of a component that count colors acurately let me know.
@randomblink: If you've got something specific in mind for CMS let me know. Are you referring to the forum or the gallery or both?
@inkspot: Adding the prev/next to the top of the page should be in the next version of the forum (currently working on it).

Again, we'd have to build some tools to prevent people from abusing
this.
They are called moderators.
I think that history would be a really neat feature to have on the
gallery.
Randomblink is also a master in postnuke, but u can't have him yet -
he's mine . Postnuke has some pretty powerful tools but sedge
could probably code it himself - no need to confuse things :D

Sometimes I'm not notified when someone replies to one of my comments in the gallery, even though it's the immediate next one.

@Lawrence: One of these days I'll make a "reply" button next to comments so there'll be less alert spam. As for missed notifications... could you send me a link to the comment thread?

What happens to Lawrence happens to me all the time? I often miss
comments directed at me, and only discover when I view the art anew. I
now go to my comments tab every so often to view any comments posted
after mine
The art history idea does not appeal to me. Move on, take what you've
learned and make new pieces, I say. If I didn't care for it at first,
nothing can be updated that would change my mind over the piece. If I
loved it already, I would hate any changes :/

It's been hapening in http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/12865.htm - this piece where flameruler has been replying directly after me but I've not recieved notification. Also in http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/12965.htm - this piece and http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/12988.htm - this one.
Also, when I view my comments tab, they're not ordered by date, I was just wondering, how are they ordered?.

There is a problem witht scrolling. Is it possible to make so that I don't have to scroll down to the bottom of his post to see the right side of the picture that is at the top?

The messages notification in the gallery does not seem to be in sync with the actual number of messages I have. It seems like it often will take a few hours to a few days for the Messages link to update with the actual number of messages I have.

Just an idea- make it so the forum displays ranks just like the gallery does, as in like, I have "Psycho" selected as my rank theme, but on the forum everyone has the navy theme. Nothing major, but something I've always darkly brooded over.

in the forum, your rank goes up to only 3 based on your postcount. On the main site, your rank can go up to 11 based on your activity there. The two are separate

It would be good if people couldn't rate their own pieces. That's what a lot of other sites do.

I agree with Lawrence, or they couldn't approve there work in Public Queue, or Fav there own pic

I find the ability to rate my own work rather useful. It helps to see what I thought of one of my pieces in a simple metric. Of course it should not contribute to the points of the piece -- and I appreciate the ability to fave my own stuff for similar reasons, so excluding self-faves from the fav count of a picture would also be useful.

For the suggestion box:
The Joint is pretty old, and it seems kind of strange for it to still have it's own forum section when it only gets a post or two per week. May I suggest merging it back with the main WIP or perhaps changing it to a general iso WIP section?

I just noticed this; when you specify the dimensions when searching the gallery, it applies that criteria only to the preview image instead of the actual image.

I would love to see a "Watch" feature.
Basically, you can set it on any image on the site, and you get
notified of comments posted on it (regardless of who from and who for),
and if the image is reuploaded after being editted.
An accompanied by an "Unwatch" feature

What do you guys think of this idea:
When the votings from the weekly challenge are over, you get a message with how many votes you got??
because now I know who won the last, but I dont know if any1 voted for me :(

Couple of things.
I like the idea of the line art gallery. People would post lineart which anyone can rate and comment on, just like a normal gallery. However, there will be a second tab under the art called "Fills", in which you can submit your fill of the line art and/or view all the fills of that same line art, sorted by rating of the real pixeljoint gallery.
When you submit a lineart fill, it automatically goes to the regular pixeljoint gallery, but links to the original lineart, in the lineart gallery as well.
Also, the smilies&links&text options toolset doesn't appear when I go to the chatterbox, for Safari on my Power Mac G4 Cube, with Mac OS X 10.4.9.
*tried to upload a screenshot, but photobucket doesn't support .tiff images*

There should be a forum for discussing the gallery itself. Reporting gliches and whatnot.

Maybe an option to view your own gallery, in order by scores given by other people on the site?
I'd like to see which of my pieces people prefer over the rest of the crap I produce (hmmm, slim pickings I know)
