 The Mana World
http://themanaworld.org - http://themanaworld.org
Project description:
The Mana World is a serious effort to create an open source 2D online RPG. This game is inspired mostly by the SNES game Secret of Mana, at least in the contents and also by Ragnarok Online which we take mostly as a reference for graphics development. We are using eAthena (a RO server emulator) as our base server while developing our own one to allow for more freedom. The game born as one of my dreams and mostly if it was feasible with my knowledge only. After 2 years of development a nice and large community grew around it. A lot was already done, and we work everyday on it.
Development team:
The development stable team is composed of 5 programmers, 3 pixel artist, 1 server administrator, 1 background story director. It could seem too few for a project that big, but fortunately we have many random and "once in their life" contributors.
Position requirements:
Most of the positions are still available for a serious artists who wish to contribute, but at the moment we are lacking monsters to expand the world, so we are looking for pixel artists capable of creating animated creatures. We can provide you with concept art:
http://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Creature_proposal - Creature proposal
or uncompleted spritesheets:
http://img124.imageshack.us/my.php?image=manamonsters1ai.png">
but we'd appreciate a lot fresh ideas.
Tech details:
The current animation system requires 4 directions (N/W/S/E). For each direction: one standing frame, 4 frames for walking cycle, 4 attack frames, 1 death frame. In development is a new animation system which will let vary any of these values as well as add variable delays between frames and more animation sequences such as different attack animations. Each frame is 60x60. The spirtesheet support alpha transparency (should be saved in PNG format).
You can take a look at current monsters here:

and here is one of the spritesheet:

Payment:
Corrupted text
I mean, this is a free project and we will never make money out of it, not by pay to play nor by advertising or whatever else. Even if we have some income with donations, those are kept to pay the domain or will be used later to improve the network structure, even if this seems not to be a problem since so many people is offering hosting for free. So no, noone will make money with TMW except the registrar of the domain.
Contact info:
If you're interested you can either reply in this topic or contact me directly. The preferred way would be to join our IRC channel, so if I'm not there someone else could help you.

I knew I've seen you before... been idling on your irc channel last year for some time. The project looked very promising and I generally appreciate what you've put up there. Sorry, I don't plan on contributing (don't feel experienced enough/probably will be occupied with other stuff in future). If at all I would be one of those "once in their life" contributors if I finally get around to take a closer look at the sources.
Anyway, just wanted to recommend taking a look at your project to the others. I hope you will find people here who are willing to put some effort into making graphics for this game. Good luck!
