Hi, Over the time, for pixelling I've been using MSpaint, MTpaint I tried a bit of Photoshop, ProMotion, Pyxel, And eventually got stuck with Graphicsgale and Grafx2, which are the only 2 I use a lot nowadays.
All graphics software is similar, learning a second one is not as much effort as learning a first. Gimp is not ideal for making pixel art. Specific pixel art software, such as graphicsgale might make things easier. Don't worry about trying out a lot, if you are going to spend a lot of time with software you better want to have the one that fits you best!

(First question remains un-answered.) Here's my first attempt at 64x64= The arrow is a little small though. Also, on the note of GraphicsGale, many of its features are locked by the free version, and as I am not interested (yet anyways) in making or spending money, I'll pass.

The images that you tried to link don't work, it's a link to a file on your own computer.
You need to actually upload the image to a service like tinypic before you link it in your message.
