Subject: Post-apocalyptic zombie horror madness!
Date Posted: 01 June 2006 at 12:07am

So its currently in an early WIP stage, and lacking the zombies, but I'm starting to get that post-apocolyptic vibe down at the moment.  Started out as a small sprite of me with a bat, then I finally decided to do something with it.  So far I've only used the colors found in the character, not sure if I want to expand the palette or keep those extreme restrictions (12 colors).  Comments/criticism?

keep in mind this is far from complete.

Do not worry, there SHALL be gratuitous violence.  And I believe I agree with the colo(u)r thing, more will be added.

Damn you... I'm Canadian and there's more colour in Canada hence the extra "u"

Nah, just kidding, there is just something aboot Canadians that makes them special.

Ah, yes, Canada.  Where the brilliant white of the snow is occasionally broken by the brown fur of a moose or bold red of a mountie's jacket.  Only kidding, of course.  And on behalf of all Americans I would like to thank you for Pamela Anderson.  Anyway, back to the matter at hand.  Here's a small  update, since I'll be out of town for a few days and I will probably be unable to work on it.  The cop turned out good, in my opinion, but the dead guy still needs some work.  I added (1) more kuller.  I hope this satisfies the public's bloodlust for the time being.

keep in mind the places and positions of existing persons and objects is not final.

Hell, I've barely got the skills for a mockup.  My computer skills extend no further than Paint and Wordpad.  How's a text based game sound?

I'm sure that if you make enough sprites we could get someone to make it for ya.

Still looking great though!  How about someone stuck under the car with a little bloody tread smear?

@Ensellitis: You and your insatiable lust for blood and gore.  Originally I was thinking more "post-apocalypse" and less "mid-apocalypse".  More "28 Days Later", less "Dawn of the Dead".  But who knows, I may just go all out and make it a bloody massacre.

@Akira: Continue I shall, this will not be abandoned.  But expect a brief hiatus, as previously mentioned.

Brilliant  The trail of blood behind the poilce zombie is superb. Greta thing is to me, the move-able-ish charaacters have a black outline, which just makes them stand out, and I really like it. the miniture stlye and detail you fit in is just amazing.

PS _ I want an obese zombie

Diggin it so far, ThereIsNoCure, but I can't help but feel the car doesn't match the people. The black outline of the characters makes me feel like the car should also be outlined- as it currently looks much less cartoony than the people.

Lovin' the palette and the little detailed textures here and there aswell

So, good changes or bad changes (mostly the car)?  Suggestions remain extremely welcome.

Perhaps space 'Slick' and 'Ed's' further apart, or write slick in a different font. At first I read it as 'Slicked's Pawn and Jewelry.'

The car always looked good, an outline just seems to match character sprites better in my head. Nice work.

Thanks, didn't notice that.  It has now been spaced.

EDIT 6/6/06:

Gooder? Badder? Some bright colors were dulled, the road is now a lighter color, etc.

Lucky you, I've UPDATED:

I've started work on the alleyway, just to let everyone know it hasn't been neglected, and busted up the windows on the left as well. The zombie officer's right leg has been moved up, and the hero has a slightly different stance.  Please feel free to point out any negative changes I have made, and I'll be sure to fix them.

I like the new partial smash look to the glass directly right of Slick Ed's sign window. The alley rat was only noticable when I zoomed in.

Thanks, iSTVAN, wasn't sure how that smashed glass would work out.  The rat seems to be a reoccuring character, I think this is his third scene I've pixeled.  Maybe he should be my personal mascot.

his... cant remeber who... but you could do the same with a rat.

@Shark: Was he an illustrator? I think I recall something about an illustrator by the name of Graeme Base putting mice into his picture books. Or atleast one of them,'the 11th Hour' and lots of frogs in his dragon book.

Enough mindless chit-chat! It's update time! (Please hold all aplause until the end of the post):

Theres probably not too much more work to be done, its finally nearing completion.  And so, it is now time to critique the hell out of it.

I thought about that myself (the window thing).  I think I'll work on that shadow in the alleyway and maybe the protagonist's bat, due to feedback over at Pixelopolis.

@MoD: Not sure if this zombie world permits zombification-ness outside of people.  A sewer though, theres an idea. Like a manhole in the road.

The shadow that is casted over the looks to be wrong, I'm sure the that wall would cover if not all, most of the dumpster

Jesus Christ, ANOTHER update? :

Another bloody corpse for Ensellitis, though I'm not sure how well I pulled it off.  I decided I'd cut all the building action anticipation bullsh*t and whack a zombie.  The pose could probably use some tweaking, I'll work with it a little bit and maybe add some more detail before wrapping this piece up.  Only downside (for me) is that since I had to move the main character, I had to get rid of that reflection/shadow deal he cast on the window, which I personally liked.

I noticed that all the zombies, besides the whacked one and the one hanging out the window, feet are pretty much in the exact same postion :P

I think you should add something up in the left corner of the piece, where the road goes up.

Besides that stuff its such a wonderful piece

Updated:

I'm getting a little tired of this project, as I'm sure the rest of you are.  Fear not, it won't be much longer.

*added bottles in alley
*upped the saturation/darkened the red
*added the teddy bear, as it seems a little too random, I might add a dead little girl (I'm sick, I know) clutching it. Thoughts?
*added a hot dog vendor cart (yes, it ISN'T a washing machine).  Leave it/remove it?
*added those small highlights to the points of the glass.
NOTE: At the time of this writing the first three topics in the WIP forum were as follows:
1.Post-apocalyptic Zombie Horror Madness

2.Sweet Zombie Jesus

3.Shock Shock Horror Horror

*cough* anyways
* bottles = nice
* i think you should just be able to see the girls arm reaching from off
the screen to the bear maybe the back of her head too, but not actualy
holdng it just reaching out.
*w00t hot dogs
*not tooo keen on the highlights on the points of the glass any ways to
make them less bright but still highlighted?

I really love the palette used in this project!  As well as the art, the sprites are really detailed for their size, which can sometimes be a hard task.  Ever thought of making this into a game?

Hopefully final/close to final/nearing final Update:

Added the dead girl, added condiment bottles, adjusted the main character's pose, added skidmarks (not sure if I like them, opinions?), toned down the highlights on the edges of the jadded glass just a tad.  So, maybe a last round of critiques/suggestions?

I love the addition of the bloody ice cream pushy cart. It's amusing.

How about zombie children!? :P

I think it would be cool to continue the image horizontally more. You could make it like a never ending zombie story board. That would be cool. :P A lot of work but... cool.
