How do I see the messages I've sent (on the main site, not the forums)?

If you mean when you have a running convo with someone else then if the other person deletes a comment from you then they will not be seen but the convo does continue.
Is that your question?

Not quite; the thing is that I don't remember if I sent a message to a certain user or not, and I would like to check.

oh, I see.
click the PM link to the person and if they have not deleted a comment you sent you'll see it.
You don't have to actually PM when you see the convo then leave the page.
