This was done pixel by pixel, despite what some think.

It started with the orangeish color, outlining my face, and adding shadows tweaking it slowly using the brush tool in PS. Then I made a new layer, and went over it pixel by pixel...

Then just erased the brush layer, and added shadows and dither etc using the pencil tool.

It was originally 5 colors but changed it to 3 using the PS, which is the only thing that wasnt done by hand.

It looks kind of messy. Like the spray paint on MSPaint. You should try to neaten it up a little.. though, it does look rather good

People probably think it's a photo color decrease because your dithering and shading is really messy and random. Usually pixel art is shaded with some amount of uniformity which makes it look much different than a photo decrease which uses random algorithims to decrease and bunch up colors.

I'd clean up the shading and try to make a background for it. Maybe clean shading isn't the style you're going for but... it might look more like a pixel art piece if you did clean it up.

Okay enough of that.

Can i ask why there's a random highlight colour in the bottom right hand corner?

Excuse my rudeness but: that hasn't been done by hand. Looking at your only other piece, the style doesn't match at all. You have random dithering, and even a random highlight like Larwick pointed out. I say this is a reduction, and if you want to change my mind, please show me a reference or other work.

Every pixel counts, even the dead ones.

Why is there an un-natural line where the cheekbone meets the neck?
It's too thick and the dither is just randomly placed...

the dithering for this is far to random to be done by hand.  jalanso and helm are masters of the random dither, and it still is more uniform than this "pixel" art.

I find it very hard to believe you did this after seeing your gallery:

i would like to know how you could go from 0 dithering, to being able to pixel better than the best.

The only way i would ever believe you did this is with: a) a reference photo, b) step by step pix.  Until i see those, i am calling bullsh*t on this...

To be honest the overall turnout on this is hardly better than the best. There's a serious lack of effort in overall tidyness.

to be done with 3 colors, you can make out what everyting is.... but
cmon lets face it - its f**king ugly.

It most definitley is a color reduction, using diffusion dither. And if it
isnt i will eat my hat!

the problem isnt just the messyness of the dithers, its the difference in messyness per place (the cheeck and neck are really neatly dithered in orange) aswell as not getting the tones you could with all sorts of dithering.

plus the lowerright part is about a 50-50 blend, why not use a simple 50-50 dither either?

and its jaggy. i could make it look better with 2 colours i think (though it would be just one hue ramp, yes)
