I'm completely new to pixel art and decided to try my hand at imitating the art from "Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX".

Since I directly referenced the tileset from the original game, the style is very close and certain tiles are shamelessly similar to the original (in particular, the walls of the buildings, some of the grass tiles, and the stone wall tiles). That being said, there was no copying/pasting and I tried my best to deconstruct the images and rework them from scratch.

This is my first real pixel art project and is mostly an experiment. All feedback and criticism appreciated.

The pallette I used comes from http://androidarts.com/palette/16pal.htm - Niklas Jansson .

The most original parts of this work, which I would like the most criticism for, are the details below:
Tree

Roof 1

Roof 2

Chimney

Cliff

Roof 1 took some inspiration from Ashkin's http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/80006.htm - GBC Grass .

It looks very nice! This doesn't really apply that much to you, since the pixel work is supposed to be very stylised and simple, but the only thing I could recommend is to incorporate more advanced clusters into your sprites. But like I said, it looks very nice as it is!

Good stuff! Link's Awakening is one of my favorite Zelda games! I have to say it's hard to critique since your purposefully trying to recreate an established style. I think you achieved it well. I recommenced, if you want to go further, creating variation to some more of the objects, especially trees. Personally, I don't like your tree but that's just me.  I think you should create two other trees. Another bigger, fuller tree and a dead version of that tree with no leaves. Maybe another grass texture and adding a variation of the fence where the wood posts are bent or broken.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a shot and report back! As someone new to pixel art (and art in general), I've found that the easiest way for me to learn these skills is to imitate other people's work and make some variations on it.

As for the tree, I don't like it much myself. I'll play around with trees in this style and try to make one that looks less like a topiary.

This is looking pretty good so far. I would fix the tress a bit though, maybe make the dark green more bushie looking? And make the bark a darker shade?
Maybe something like this? (maybe not 100% like this but I hope it gives you an idea)

I would also make the shading under the buildings darker too.
I hope any of this helps! :3

Thanks for the mock-up, LCSkeleton! I see what you mean and I like the way it looks. I haven't touched this project in a while but when I do, your mock-up will be helpful. I think the trees are the weakest element of the tileset right now.

I'll update this post periodically with related work. I'm using this tileset and some related sprite sheets to populate a Zelda clone using libGDX as a means to learn the library and practice pixel art.
