Hi! I'm trying to make pokemon sprites based on Ken Sugimori's concept art for pokemon red & green.
I'm also using the limitations of the gbc pokemon games.
http://pkmn.net/?action=content&page=viewpage&id=8593&parentsection=87 - Example of gbc sprites

I'm starting off by making a charizard sprite:

Next step is color. If anyone has critique on the sprite, it would be greatly apreciated!

Concept art: Ken sugimori

The wing makes a tangent with the tail, making it look like they're somehow stuck together. Tangents are when two objects that are not meant to be touching touch or almost touch in an image, it usuallt looks a bit distracting or can even cause the viewer to misinterpret the image. Keep an eye out for them and avoid unintentional tangents. I think in the case of the wings, you'd actually be better off following the reference a little closer in having them raised up rather than oriented vertically.

The reference also has some problematic tangents in it though. A good exercise could be to look at the reference, find them, and find ways to avoid them in your version.

It's good, but I'd like to point something:

1 - There's a lump in its tail, and I think it would look better if you round it. It's a little square like the tail is 'broken', I marked it with a red square.

2 - I think that would looks better is the left leg, if you erase the pixels marked in red and draw on the marked in green. The intention is to make the leg seems to be on top of the foot. I don't know, this can make the foot looks a little flat, but trying cost nothing.

3 - And by last, try draw a pixel in the green point and erase the red point I marked on the image.
It feels like the left wing is passing over the right wing.

I'm a beginner, but I think these tips can help.
I'd like to make these modifications here, but I can't right now, haha

Thanks for the help guys!

Fixed the tail, fixed the left foot and messed around with the left wing.
It's going to be hard for me to see mistakes at this point, so if you see something just point it out.

This is were I'm at in terms of coloration:

Might have went a bit overboard with the dither, I'm trying to match the original sprites.

in the gbc sprite, the fire has an orange outline instead of a black one. right now it looks more like an autumn leaf.

otherwise... it's good

It's very nice, but let me point 2 things I'm seeing that can improve you art.

1 - you could draw some black pixels to show the division of its right foot on the conection with its right leg (of course it's with the right leg lol) like this:

2 - I'm not sure but I think you could give it a more orange tone, lowering the saturation or changing the hue. I think changing the hue gonna give it a best result because your goal is that gbc pokemon style and this eyeburning isn't gonna be a problem.

Here is a Charmander!
You're welcome to tear it apart! (with critique of course)

Its flame is pretty dark, maybe replace the dark inner with white/another lighter color? On most classic illustrations, his tail's flame is half red half yellow.
Also with the flame, you could make it a secondary lightsource in order to make your piece look more dynamic ;)

We're getting there!
I kinda need some help with the left leg, it looks off?
The left arm also looks off.

Fusionnist: Cool edit! The problem with that is, pokemon don't really cast light with their flames, and I'm trying to do (roughly) the same style.

Guess I'm done with these.
Not sure if I'll continue making sprites, if I do it I'll probably make a new thread.

And now I'm seeing its left leg is darker.. I don't know but it looks strange to me and you should make it lighter like the right leg.
