Ugh. I thought I had skills, but I haven't, it seems. What I've got so far is decent, but I've got no setting (Wtf is it? an island?) or much of an idea as per characters and enemies.

So I come to you for help. I'm trying to build myself up a portfolio in hopes of acquiring a job as a pixel artist. Upon starting, however, I realised that I most often do random artistic pieces and very seldom tiles or sprites. THIS tends to be a problem, so I'm trying and failing to teach m'self.

Always too much talk. Here, crit.

I'm no expert with tiles. I have tried to make some and find its best to just draw the whole canvas ignoring the actual tile grid, then redraw it using only tiles from the whole piece. This way all the items fit in well. By going with your aproach it would seem that the items may not integrate as well as they can. Here the grass blases are too different in scale from the palm fronds.
