I went and found this spritesheet for Jacket from Hotline Miami here http://i.imgur.com/KrgULJt.jpg . If you look to the left of the images there appears to be a lot of idle animations and there's 8 sprites for each animation. Why? As far as I can tell there isn't much of a transition from one sprite to the next so any ideas as to why the idle animations were done this way?

Smoothness of animation and accounting for idle animations with each individual weapon in the game, I'd assume.

It's not even certain that the game itself has duplicates : It may be the sprite ripper who chose to display them this way, so it's easier to understand the animations and their timing.
For example one has AAAAABBB : First image is shown for a longer time than the second.
