Hi, I'm back!

I started the next piece of my serie today :)

Let's introduce Le long chemin vers les réponses!

The previous WIP was a little bit messy at his beginning so I try to keep the first steps of this one readable for your enjoyement and keep your ability to see where I'm going with this!  :)

The image is strongly inspired by an a-w-e-s-o-m-e belgium comic artist known as François Schuiten. He's famous in the belgium comic scene because of his comic named "Les Cités Obscures". Be sure to give a try, it worth it!

Some inspirational work from Schuiten

Your sketch looks really inspiring! Also, i can see why you admire this author, those are some incredibly moody scenes.

I find it interesting that you go straight from rough sketch to final pixel work, without blocking in to see how your colours and shapes will work. Is there a reason for that? Do you have a very good mind's eye?

The rimlight on the two dunes closest to the viewer feel rough, and not in a "sandy" way, it just looks like rough pixelling with too much AA in some places and not enough in others, perhaps because the third dune is so smooth by comparison.
I'm not sure where a rimlight could come from anyway since there doesn't seem to be a lightsource that low, so perhaps the pink light should be less of a rimlight and more of a key light, affecting more of the dunes' surface?

Hi eishiya!

About palette, there is no magic. I'm setting up four or five tones (usually the same for each pieces I'm doing, so i'm getting used to it) and the more picture progress, the more i complete missing tones with gradient tool. I don't know if i have mind's eye, but I know well theses colors I know how to deal with. Also I'm painting and drawing a lot, so maybe that's it.

About the rim light, you're absolutely right. The light source will come from the two moons, so depending how it will look's like I will keep these slight light, or not.

Thank you for your input anyway :)

I agree with eishiya about blocking out a rough layout of the scene before proceeding to refined pixelling.

Interesting scene. Are you going to use a general brown-purple tone overall?
I think some hue variation here and there might be good.

I was thinking about hue variation in some part indeed. I don't know yet.
Also I should indeed change my workflow and process the whole scene, step by step before refined pixelling some part.

Long time no see...

I follow given advices and clear here and there the whole picture, setting up large color blocks to see where I'm going with this. I also redefined some colors.
It's much easier to work now and it feel more balanced :)

Hope you'll enjoy. Still work in progress...

Next steps will about add some hue variation and go further in details.

Some progress of this week-end

Hue variation:

This is neat because I've reach the maximum number of colors I allowed myself for this piece without any drawbacks.

Puting details now:

some progress of today

More hue variation I like where it's going, what about you?

Also I add more and more detail on the towers. Which are really difficult to draw. The weird architecture and pattern cames from a vision of mine a had like often with this pixel art series.

Definitely like the purple in the sands. Much more atmosphere.

Keep it up! Looks really good.

Some news!

add Some details

And then having hard time to save some colors to add extra golden ring to increase the surreal feels and look of the scene. The contrast has been raised as well

Done with the sky... I had hard time on this and I'm still not satisfied...

I can't wait to see how this turns out ^-^

To help with the sky, perhaps the contrast on the darker clouds to the left is too high? Especially those above the book. That, and it seems like you added squiggly lines on the clouds where it would instead be the underside of the cloud and less detailed, like here v and here v.

I think an additional problem with the clouds is that the shading on them is very even, it follows the outlines of each cloud section almost exactly, making them look flat. Clouds have complex forms, so the shadows don't correspond to the shapes like that.

@ http://pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=66218&FID=8 - Knightsabers You're right, I'll will fix that!

@ http://pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=28557&FID=8 - eishiya I will try to refactor clouds, but later, I need to make advance on something else.

Thank you both for your input :)
