This thread is all about ranting and raving about something you think everyone should enjoy - a movie, a show, music, food, a city you visited. This something should be relatively unheard of to the mass majority and you should be able to write a review (a short one at least) detailing why you think it's worth checking out. Personally, I'm a big fan of movies and decent anime. Once I've seen it, everybody has to know about it. So, to start things off, let me talk to you about a wonderful anime I just finished watching: SAMURAI 7 http://www.samurai7.tv/ - - The Seven Samurai which was filmed in 1954. The 26 episode series takes place in the future around a small village in need of some hired help to get rid of the Noburesi (the Bandits) who repeatedly come back to raid their rice fields. The village sends a girl with a small entourage to find samurai who will help defend them from the bandits. Throughout the series, I was impressed to find how greatly the characters and story were developed. It's not up there with great animes like Cowboy Bebop or Lain but this is no Dragonball Z either. This series truly makes great strides in trying to honor Kurosawa's classic original while taking on a new audience with sci-fi themes melded in. Check it out if you have the means |

Chrono Trigger: In my opinion, THE best rpg for the super nintendo. For its time, the graphics are superb, almost as good as the gameplay. The time traveling aspect gives the game an interesting twist. The Zombie Horror Genre: Well, obviously, zombies mean violence, which is always good. My favorite characteristic of the genre, however, is the empty world in which the protagonist often finds himself in, notably in "28 Days Later" and others such as the novel "I Am Legend". In such a world, the character has the freedom, because of the lack of a society or authority, to do whatever he pleases, but lacks the freedom to enjoy it, because of either the dangers of the undead, the lack of human company to enjoy it with, or a combination of both. In such a scenario there are limitless possibilities to toy with, making it a genre I find quite enjoyable. ------------- |

I'm all about my books. They pretty much kick ass, and if you ever need an idea, you're bound to find inspiration somewhere in the three hundred pages a book usually provides. A couple of the good ones are as follows. Catch-22 is one of the most confusing, kickest-ass books ever. The most accurate way to describe it that I've come across is much like Jalonso's parallax effects... sort of. There are a bunch of layers, basically, and they interact peculiarly, but in an appealing way. On top of that, it tugs at most emotions out there, save for the very most popular. It's set in a war, but I still honestly have no idea WHICH war, and I didn't know who the main character was till a good three chapters in. To take a maturity-step down, you've got The Uglies By Scott westerfield. Not that phenomenal a storyline, but a lot of sweet pokes at the way we see things. Cool book. Last on the novel run is Castaways of the Flying Dutchman by Brian Jacques. Just a cool book, and it DOES have religious undertones, but it's rather cool nonetheless. Basically the kid is immortal and young, and goes around bein' a good kid, kicking the sh*t outta bulles, and the like. On to the NON-BOOK books. I have but a few words to say on the subject, and they go as follows: Calvin and Hobbes. coolness never did play Chrono Trigger but heard great stuff about it. What I like best about zombie movies is how they present the true human aspect more than most other movies. This is survival of the fittest. Every man, woman, and child for themselves. It also creates a theme of what do we have to live for and are we really "living" our lives. If not, we are all merely just zombies living day in and day out for no reason whatsoever except to feed off society to satisfy our own short term needs. ------------- |

Book: Fight Club It must have been one of the strangest and most interesting reads I've ever had. It's on a whole 'nother from the film, and the original ending is thought provoking.. plus then you have a book which tells you useful stuff, such as how to make napalm. L4yer Cake - it is one of my favourite books of all time. It just had me interested and taught me a few lessons about life. It is about a an anonymous drug dealer who operates in modern day london. His plan is to work quietly under the disguise as a business man, build up his fortune and retire young. It gives an insight into the criminal world and has a few clever twists. I havent seen the film, i think it may ruin my view of this thrilling book. Love all the People - Its a sort-of autobiography of the famous comedian Bill Hickes. Hickes died of cancer, but the book contains some of his standup shows, poems letters and writings from other people. It really is inspiring. His way of thinking and attitudes towards corporations taking over this world are inspiring. It may not be for everyone, but even after his death Bill Hickes continues to share his views through comedy and this wonderful book. ------------- Snark, we love yuu. |

I also have Harry Potter and Philosophy and there's plenty more in the series including other pop culture references. Seinfeld, The Simpsons, The Matrix, Buffy the Vamprite Slayer, LotR, Baseball, The Sopranos, Woody Allen, to even Mel Gibson's Passion and Philosophy. I really enjoy philosophy myself. It's fascinating to me. But this particular Star Wars one is filled with cool essays with titles such as: "Stoicism in the Stars: Yoda, the Emperor, and the Force," "Size Matters Not: The Force as the Casual Power of the Jedi," and "A Certain Point of View: Lying Jedi, Honest Sith, and the Viewers Who Love Them". Essays FTW. And if you're interested in philosophy, I'd definately try http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0425152251/qid=1152204995/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/002-1470222-7949654?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 - - Angels & Demons is much more entertaining and dynamic. It's not as predictable and it's got a lot of twists and turns. Marvel Comics, Civil War series This comic book series is a very suspenseful and politically driven one, and it spans into other comic book series' such as Spiderman. (wonderful site!). Already linked it in the chatterbox once . Can't
wait for my next payday so I could buy an PSP and the game. Loved http://katamari.namco.com/ - Katamari also. Been so bored with all of 'em FPS's and realistic 3D graphics and stuff. Nice to see something else for awhile. Something cute and fun instead of killing monsters all over and over. Been also reading the first manga I really like. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maison_Ikkoku - Maison Ikkoku is a nice lovestory (mainly) with an ordinary setting (no fightings etc) and quite believable and lovable characters. What else? Definitely http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001754/ - Todd Solondz . Didn't like Happiness at first but after seeing Storytelling, had to check out the other films he have done (except the short ones from the eighties, can't find 'em anywhere). Palindromes was a little disappointment but Welcome to the dollhouse was yet again fine experience. I think Solondz tells us more about ourselves and humanity than we sometimes care to know. Robot Chicken: Why? Never have I seen a show so random and yet funny. The cool thing about it is, you don't have any characters you have to know or any previous storylines to follow. So you can start watching it at any time and still think it's hilarious. It's basically made up of small skits dealing with pop culture and other references making jokes and satire. Great idea for a thread PB... I like seeing people's passions in a bit more detail.
Psychonauts: If you are a fan of the old LucasArts adventure games (Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, Sam and Max) or any of the new platformers (Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Jakk and Dexter) you must give this game a try. Although I did get stuck a few times and had to check http://gamefaqs.com - gamefaqs.com often, the overall difficulty isn't too bad.
My favorite part of the game is being able to jump into into other character's minds as "levels". This mindf**k really allows diverse gameplay and bizarre settings to emerge naturally. Each character's brain is totally unique and they all reflect their personallity perfectly.
Psychonauts has clever and genuinely funny gameplay, excellent voice acting and top notch art direction. What more could you want out of a platformer?

Secret of Monkey Island if you have not tried it. I'm not gonna name reasons, it's just overall great. ><; Recently I found a few good freeware games, mostly clones of popular mainstream games. Here are a couple: http://demonews.com/download.php?det=1485 - Grid Wars - clone of popular Geometry Wars Xbox live arcade game. It was shut down, but you can still download. It seems less fast paced? Or maybe I'm just getting better? Sigh. http://louhi.kempele.fi/%7Eskyostil/uv/fretsonfire/ - Frets on Fire - (finally) a Guitar Hero clone like Stepmania is for DDR. It's very simple and only has 3 songs it comes with, but the community creates more so you're in for hours of fun, or at least 10 mins. Instead of a plastic guitar, it suggests you play your keyboard like a guitar, which I tried and it's really not all that bad. Plucking with the return key just doesn't work too well. :P http://www.plasmapong.com/ - Plasma Pong - not a clone necessarily, but an extension of Pong. it's great with hallucinatory hallogens! not that we... would .. actually do that.... -------------  |
