Hello everyone!

I've been getting into tileset creation lately and have been playing around with the idea of a top down rpg/action hybrid set in space.

The first thing I'm working on is coming up with a believable map for a space station, where the player might start off.

Some things I've learned already as I've been making tiles:
  • Floor tiles might look cool with a lot of detail, but less is better when it comes to overall layout.
  • Just because your tile looks good, doesn't mean it's going to look good tiled in large areas of the map. I had made the mistake earlier of creating flooring with edging along the tile edge, creating tile city. It didn't look good!
  • Doors taller than my character size (32px) means using two tile sets, which creates some challenges with creating walls/rooms that connect together.

Some of the current challenges I'm facing with the top down layout is how I display walls/insides of walls. I've currently just used a stitch style pattern around the insides, but I could use diagonal lining as well.

I'll post more as I go! Feedback always welcome.

I really like this. That's a great door! I agree with you on the floor tiles. It's the sprites above them that should shine. I think for wall interiors, dark colour and plain is probably enough to make it readable. Maybe hint at another dimension to give some depth. I'm in the middle of a very similar scene at the moment myself! Mine looks like this:
