First tutorial I've ever done \o/ I hope all the newbies find it useful. My next lesson will probably be "How to rip other's art and never get caught". Don't hold your breath though.

To be honest, I'm not sure about it even myself. I guess I have kinda twisted sense of humor.

That wasn't my main point anyway. I primarly wanted to show everyone how easy it is to fake pixelart and in the same time how easy it is to spot. I think every noobie should take a hint and stop trying. Otherwise you will only make a clown out of yourself.

In fact I spent quite a time with step 3 in my piece and you still can tell it's only a fixed reduction. Most of the noobies don't have patience or skills even to complish this part properly so it should be very easy to spot them. Right?

My second point was to possibly start a discussion of definitions of pixelart. In this case, I didn't even bother to post my "art" to PJ gallery, still using it as an avatar in http://www.last.fm/user/kaltsu - Last.fm . It looks nice and tells people quite well that I'm into pixelling.

Nevertheless not the best possible example. Let's take another point of view. When you do graphics in the game business, you damn sure use references, sketches, tracing, every possible tool and way to make them sprites and backgrounds look good. We don't complain so why are we so strict about it in the PJ? Or are we?

I'm sometimes very uncertain about the boundaries of pixelart myself. Where do you draw a line?

Though..You still need some skill and experience to be able to take Step 2 to Step 3.

I found it funny.  Basically all you need to know how to do to reach step 3 is dither.  This just goes to show the value of reference photos.
