Welcome to the 9th PJ-Official ISO collab fellow members of Pixel Joint! This time, the theme is the one that we have been asked for the most: Medieval! This includes everything medieval like castles, knights and of course medieval fantasy elements such as wizards and dragons - but do not be limited to medieval Europe, you're free to include elements from American, Asian, African, Nordic or Middle Eastern medieval cultures. It's time to get Medieval!

Rules
- You can create more than one tile but your tile may not neighbor your own tile (even diagonally).
- Only one active tile reservation at any one time per participant. You must finish a tile before making a new one. - Once you reserve a tile you must post an initial WIP within 4 days so it doesn't hold others up. 4 days pass quickly, so it is a good idea to post your WIP as soon as possible. - Once you post an initial WIP you get 7 days to update your tile or post a comment letting us know its active. Every new WIP/post update (busy, school, work, sick, moving, etc.) thereafter buys you another 7 days. This period is given so that you don't have to rush it, try not to forget your reservation. - Outer tiles MUST use transparency to 'break the grid' (See the last collab edges http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=26631 - HERE ). - Inner tiles CAN NOT use transparency. - You must use the supplied palette colors (14) only, but you don't have to use them all in your tile (Those making outer tiles will have one extra color for transparency). - NO animations. - Your tile must match the tiles surrounding yours, unless your tile has no neighbors ( - Matching your neighbors does not mean it has to continue their idea/concept. Just that it blends seamlessly somehow. Note that this doesn't mean you're supposed to destroy your neighbors' ideas. Stay within the collab spirit! - Please keep the collab's general light-source and scale as shown below consistent in your tile. This may be tweaked in your tile if you use secondary light sources. - Please post your tile on its own as a comment and make sure to say what number it is and it will be added to the collab master image by a Collab Manager in order to keep the color palette true. - Your tile may be added to the master image in WIP stages if it shows the tile's direction enough to help others visualize their own tiles. Special Rules - - From the 11th tile on (or once a finished tile has been put into place) your new tile reservations MUST have at least one neighboring (a diagonal neighbor is not enough except for border tiles) tile already posted that your tile blends into. - In the event that a tile is made without a reservation or 2 people accidentally work on the same tile a special vote may be held, or a duel to the death may be started by the 2 people. - Special rule(s) may be added to accommodate whatever loophole y'alls manage to find and exploit. Special request from Gecimen: Let us have some
means of contacting you in case you forget your reservation. The most
common way is setting your PJ account to email you whenever you receive a
PM. Notes - Novice or pro, all are encouraged to collaborate. - Possible tile rejection if your tile is not in isometric projection or fails in scale. - Possible tile rejection if your tile does not match and blend into your neighbor(s) tile. - Possible tile rejection if your tile's concept defies the collab theme. - Possible tile rejection if your tile just doesn't blend in with
some degree of harmony. Should this happen to you check for comments
left for you... there will be some!
- You can get tips and help to improve your tile on this thread. No need to make a separate WIP thread. - You are encouraged to take all c+c on your tile. You do not need to apply all given c+c but please don't ignore them. Especially from your neighbor. Remember this is a 'collaboration'. - Please use Yanrishatum's upgraded 'PJ Image Specs' tool http://yanrishatum.ru/pj/ - HERE to check your final tile colors has max 14 colors (+ transparency, 15 if an outer tile) and the right colors. FAQ: Q: Can I extend my tile over someone else's tile? A: No. You can only ask them to edit their own
tile, and if they don't, you'll have to find another way. The only
exception is border tiles where you can slightly extend over your
neighbor's transparent space (for continuity reasons). Note: "your neighbor's transparent space" means you do have an existing neighbor tile. Q: If I have a border tile, can I extend my tile further than the border of the collab image? A:
Yes. We will enlarge the collab image as required. As with everything,
be reasonable on this (don't put a 100 px long tentpole just for the sake of
enlarging the image size). Here are some examples of border tiles from PrehISOria (tiles belong to S.g.m., Gecimen, Night, Vierbit):  Q: What can I do if I want to draw something really big? A: If you want to draw something that will take more than a tile, you can draw a lineart sketch and ask people to join your "mini collab". If it's something interesting, you will certainly find people. Then you do your own part and let other people do their own thing. Everyone can add their own taste into their own tiles. You can check previous collabs for mini collabs. Q: Can somebody else finish my tile from where I left? A: No. We may allow this under very special circumstances (e.g. health) but normally unless you want to finish your tile, you have to give up on it. Q: Is it OK to drop my reservation? Will I be banned? A: Not at all. You can drop your reservations as many times as you want. Q: I can't reach a certain quality. What should I do? A: Collabs are great for this. You can work on your neighbor tiles, listen to criticism, and start over as many times as you want. What matters most is you to be satisfied, and learn in the process. As long as we see you have given your best effort and your tile meets the criteria such as continuity, theme, lighting, scale & perspective; we will accept it. Q: Can I use some existing pixels in my tile? A: No, even if it was made by you. Everything in your tile must be made for this collab, by yourself. Q: When I reserve a tile, do I need confirmation by mods to begin working on it? A: Confirmation by mods may take upto 24 hours. So, if you are sure of these, you can begin working without confirmation. 1- your previous tile (if any) is finished, 2- you haven't made a neighboring tile previously, 3- the same tile is not claimed by someone else (check out the reservation table & latest posts), 4- the tile has a completed neighboring tile by someone else (except for first 10 tiles). |

I've been wanting to get in at the start of a collab for a while but I'm always too late.

@Mirre, Eggy and Lehmure, sure they are yours. We're all cluttered on the top but well.... @Reo, amazing already. I can see they are playing chess but don't know if they are from a movie or something. Last 2 un-neighbored tiles to claim. Please take them from southern part of the collab.

Heyo, new guy here, interested in making some tiles. Quick question, the hexadecimal codes from Reo's palette are supposed to be the colors right? When I downloaded the image on Aseprite, I got different colors from the numbers and had to manually correct. Is it supposed to be like that from the image itself or is there some secret setting on Aseprite? Thanks in advance.

I haven't checked them myself but if you download the palette image and work with it, it will be allright. Also I'll write here once tiles become available, which is when the first person posts their finished tile.

@Esven: Great tile! Nice to see such a detailed building, bodes well for the rest of the collab. A humble suggestion from me would be to maybe add a couple of small birds on the roof?
@Krugelix: Good start! My main critiques for you would be to connect all those broken lines, so it doesn't just look like a row of dots. I would also consider not using the beige colors for the pyramid since you are also using those shades in your character as well as in the ground, makes it all blend together. The purple+green options can stand in for grey/blue stone in the pyramid. |

@marcelcomics yes. @maye, pick one. you can pick next to Esven's or Reo's tiles. @Reo amazing! 34, 36, 37, 49, 50, 51, 52 are ripe for taking. Note to all: I am fixing your colors before I put on the main image but it would still save me some time if you double checked :) Note 2: I removed the hex codes until they are fixed by a volunteer :)

Well first time participants usually have problems in geometry but yours is fine I’d focus on grass and soil texture and maybe stone texture.

Sorry for being a little slow to reply to people.
@marcelcomics I had originally intended for the dark section to be the beginning of some foliage. I kind of fell in love with the pastel style of trees shown in one of Jinn's references during the pallet completion. 
You're free to do whatever you want with it though or see it in any way you please. I don't want to change things while people are still working on nearby tiles but if I have to I can always go back and change my tile to better fit whatever others have chosen to do. @Gecimen no it's not really based on any reference and there isn't much of a usable sketch left outside the tile boundaries. This tile actually changed quite a bit from the sketch because I originally had things laid out in a way which wasn't quite isometric. Feel free to expand on it however you please. |

OK I see, thanks for the reply ! If you don't mind, I will still try to make it work with the bridge first. I also realized that there may be continuity issues with Reo's tile, so maybe I'll eventually have to redo the whole thing.

@Something Fishy Overall I like the concept of the tile. I think the gravestones are looking very copy pasted though. Details like that can be a great opportunity to add a bit story. Different gravestones can have different ages, some might be opulent while others might be simple wooden grave markers, and you can have graves close together in places where a family might be buried side by side. You could even consider adding something more detailed like an ossuary, the edge of a mausoleum, or some shovels and an open grave.
These aren't really meant to be specific suggestions, more I just want to show how much room there is with those details to give the graveyard a bit more story and character. If you wanted a bit of reference material to pull from there's a game called "Graveyard Keeper" which has some excellent pixel art in places. |

@something fishy; as Esven said a graveyard is already a great idea for a tile, also remember you don't need to make the ground fully straight / well plowed, old graveyards tended to have small hills and stuff within. You can make (shooting examples here) small tombs, a crying angel statue and other types of gravestones. Oh and don't forget to put a part of a dead tree :D  |

@Krugelix, This time (since you made the shadows in the same color) it's too gray so the shape isn't readable again. Can you please check how I colored the left side surfaces and shadows in two different colors? Also the borders of stone blocks are too uniform this time, looks like Lego rather than an old temple. Check Esven's and Jeremy's bricks for inspiration.

I'm not MIA, here's a WIP.
Everyone is doing such a great job. We're off to a great start! @Reo: Love your Seventh Seal tile! @Esven: Beautiful cathedral. The birds were a nice addition. @Jeremy: Your tile is both fitting really nice with the theme, and there's something cool for us to continue working from. @Marcelcomics: Tile looks great! You do have some space to add more medieval things too if you'd like. The fox and chicken are a little hard to see. Maybe if you added a darker outline between them and the ground? |

What I do like about the fact that these 3 early tiles close to each other has buildings in them is that we're gonna get something closer to resembling a town or settlement than we've ever had in these collabs. WIP on mine. Gonna re-think most of the roof. Still trying things out here.

It would help us a lot in giving feedback if you pasted your WIP into your posts. The biggest tip I can give you is to worry 100% about geometry and isometric perspective before anything else. Currently neither your tree or the dirt in front of the tombstone are in perspective. Everything that is sitting flat on the ground should be using those 2.1 thick pixel lines. Set up a grid. Draw little isometric boxes where your items should be, even organic things like trees. The stroke/Line tool is your friend. The more grids and guides you set up before you start the easier it will be to keep things in check. Here's some tips for working isometrically, it might be a lot to take in but there's some tips here for making slopes. Which is the same way you would go about making a bumpy/hilly area. 
I did also find this old piece from the gallery, showing how you could use raised areas for grave mounds.

Wow this collab is moving fast. Been a little busy lately but I'll definitely try to pick up another tile over the weekend myself.
@Jeremy I love the knight, you managed to squeeze a lot of detail in there and I almost immediately want to grab a tile nearby and build of the castle you've started. I look forward to seeing how it grows. @Marcelcomics I really like the the water filled cart tracks. It adds a lot of personality. @Reo that tile is already looking stunning and your approach has given me a lot of ideas for how to work with the pallet in the future. The way you use purple in particular is really interesting. @Jeremy that tile and it turned out great. The creature you're using for reference is really unique and you've realized them perfectly. |

My first WIP for Tile #55. It features a road sign and a knight. I'm trying to make the road for the path a little bendy but not too wide, maybe I need some rocks against the side? That and if you have any advice on shading for the knight would much appreciated. You seem to have put the imgur page not the image address. You generally want a link that ends in a file extension like .png

@b236; thank you buddy! @Mirre; looking great! @Jeremy, another piece of mastery! @Nitbe; no sorry, only tiles with a neighbor are available, please check the main page of the collab! @pixelated cloud, the scale looks good, however for the perspective of the knight please check out Jeremy's first tile. It needs to be in isometric perspective, but right now it's side view.
