Welcome to the 11th PJ-Official ISO collab fellow members of Pixel Joint!
This
time, the theme is Mythology! Mythological scenes, creatures, gods and places are all welcome; and not just the well known stuff such as Greek, Norse and Egyptian but from all around the world and ages such as Mayan, Indian, African and Far-eastern.
The gods will reign again!
Collab Rules, Specs, Notes and FAQ on Post 3 below
This project features https://pixeljoint.com/p/474.htm - Morganne 's award winning palette.
If you submit your tile to your PJ Gallery (which you should) you do not have to credit Morganne but it would be nice of you.
Scale example:
Characters in the scale example are drawn by http://pixeljoint.com/p/4343.htm - vierbit in one of the previous collabs.
This collab is being run by your fellow PJ moderators.

Rules
- You can create more than one tile but your tile may not neighbor your own tile (even diagonally).
- Only one active tile reservation at any one time per participant. You must finish a tile before making a new one.
- Once you reserve a tile you must post an initial WIP within 4 days
so it doesn't hold others up. 4 days pass quickly, so it is a good idea
to post your WIP as soon as possible.
- Once you post an initial WIP you get 7 days to update your tile or
post a comment letting us know its active. Every new WIP/post update
(busy, school, work, sick, moving, etc.) thereafter buys you another 7
days. This period is given so that you don't have to rush it, try not to
forget your reservation.
- Outer tiles MUST use transparency to 'break the grid' (See one of the last collab edges http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=26631 - HERE ). - Inner tiles CAN NOT use transparency. - You must use the supplied palette colors (18) only, but you don't have
to use them all in your tile (Those making outer tiles will have one
extra color for transparency).
- NO animations.
- Your tile must match the tiles surrounding yours, unless your tile has no neighbors (up to first 10
tiles). This will become increasingly tougher as tiles get added. Some tiles will need to match on as many as 4 sides.
- Matching your neighbors does not mean it has to continue their
idea/concept. Just that it blends seamlessly somehow. Note that this
doesn't mean you're supposed to destroy your neighbors' ideas. Stay
within the collab spirit! - Please keep the collab's general light-source and scale as shown
below consistent in your tile. This may be tweaked in your tile if you
use secondary light sources.
- Please post your tile on its own as a comment and make sure to say
what number it is and it will be added to the collab master image by a
Collab Manager in order to keep the color palette true.
- Your tile may be added to the master image in WIP stages if it shows the tile's direction enough to help
others visualize their own tiles.
Special Rules
- The first 10 tiles may be anywhere (but the borders) and require no
neighboring tiles. If you pick one of these first 10 tiles, please try to
finish your tile a.s.a.p. in order to open up space for others.
- From the 11th tile on (or once a finished tile has been put into
place) your new tile reservations MUST have at least one neighboring (a
diagonal neighbor is not enough except for border tiles)
tile already posted that your tile blends into.
- In the event that a tile is made without a reservation or 2 people
accidentally work on the same tile a special vote may be held, or a
duel to the death may be started by the 2 people.
- Special rule(s) may be added to accommodate whatever loophole y'alls manage to find and exploit.
Special request from Gecimen: Let us have some
means of contacting you in case you forget your reservation. The most
common way is setting your PJ account to email you whenever you receive a
PM.
Notes
- Novice or pro, all are encouraged to collaborate.
-
If you are new to collabs and you aren't sure how it will turn out,
please consider claiming an inner tile, rather than a border tile, since
the latter takes a lot more effort.
- Possible tile rejection if your tile is not in isometric projection or fails in scale.
- Possible tile rejection if your tile does not match and blend into your neighbor(s) tile.
- Possible tile rejection if your tile's concept defies the collab theme.
- Possible tile rejection if your tile just doesn't blend in with
some degree of harmony. Should this happen to you check for comments
left for you... there will be some!
- You can get tips and help to improve your tile on this thread. No need to make a separate WIP thread.
- You are encouraged to take all c+c on your tile. You do not need
to apply all given c+c but please don't ignore them. Especially from
your neighbor. Remember this is a 'collaboration'.
- Please use Mirre's upgraded 'PJ Image Specs' tool https://www.linneart.com/pj/ - HERE to check your final tile colors has max 18 colors (+ transparency, 19 if an outer tile) and the right colors.
FAQ:
Q: Can I extend my tile over someone else's tile?
A: No. You can only ask them to edit their own
tile, and if they don't, you'll have to find another way. The only
exception is border tiles where you can slightly extend over your
neighbor's transparent space (for continuity reasons).
Note: "your neighbor's transparent space" means you do have an existing neighbor tile.
Q: If I have a border tile, can I extend my tile further than the border of the collab image? A: NO (Important rules change). We have already enlarged the master image up to its limits. You need to stay within the image which is 100 pixels towards the image border + the tile itself. Here are some examples of border tiles from
PrehISOria (tiles belong to S.g.m., Gecimen, Night, Vierbit):
Q: What can I do if I want to draw something really big?
A: If you want to draw something that will take
more than a tile, you can draw a lineart sketch and ask people to join
your "mini collab". If it's something interesting, you will certainly
find people. Then you do your own part and let other people do their own
thing. Everyone can add their own taste into their own tiles. You can
check previous collabs for
mini collabs.
Q: Can somebody else finish my tile from where I left?
A: No. We may allow this under very special
circumstances (e.g. health) but normally unless you want to finish your
tile, you have to give up on
it.
Q: Is it OK to drop my reservation? Will I be banned?
A: Not at all. You can drop your reservations as many times as you want.
Q: I can't reach a certain quality. What should I do?
A: Collabs are great for this. You can work on your
neighbor tiles, listen to criticism, and start over as many times as
you want. What matters most is you to be satisfied, and learn in the
process. As long as we see you have given your best effort and your tile
meets the
criteria such as continuity, theme, lighting, scale & perspective;
we will
accept it.
Q: Can I use some existing pixels in my tile?
A: No, even if it was made by you. Everything in your tile must be made for this collab, by yourself.
Q: When I reserve a tile, do I need confirmation by mods to begin working on it?
A: Confirmation by mods may take upto 24 hours. So, if you are sure of these, you can begin working without confirmation.
1- your previous tile (if any) is finished,
2- you haven't made a neighboring tile previously,
3- the same tile is not claimed by someone else (check out the reservation table & latest posts),
4- the tile has a completed neighboring tile by someone else (except for first 10 tiles).

Anyone wish to share their ideas so we won't start with 5 Herculeses or something? I haven't decided yet, but I will know what not to choose if someone share (it can be in private message) ;)

I was thinking to do start a collab within the collab of Yggdrasill.
I also had the idea that it could look cool with Jörmungandr (the world serpent) wrapping all around the edges. Anyone else like the idea?

Sure thing. The rule is first 10 tiles can't be edge tiles so they are done as soon as possible (to let future participants find available tiles asap).

marceles has claimed 72 a little above you. But you can pick another tile and still be among the first 10 claimed.

I'm afraid that Reo has claimed 66, which touches sides with 58. You could still claim another tile.

I took the liberty to do two things, first I updated the image with reserved tiles in pink color. And second I gave people appropriate tiles.
60 - Xmenekai 43 - Elk 86 - Nightmare
RESERVATIONS ARE CLOSED UNTIL ONE OR MORE TILES ARE DONE.

@Xmenekai There is really no need for you to worry about mapping out the tiles, Gecimen and the other mods have got it handled. There's always a bit of a scramble as the first tiles are picked. Just worry about your own tile :)

Thought about that and thought it can be taken as conventions. Like this could be baby sized hut. Seems like I have to change object then

@Tipleloop: Looks absolutely amazing! Wonderful mermaids!! Scale looks great, and there aren't really any buildings that can look "off" with the perspective. Looks great!
@Xmenekai: It's a great start! Take your hut and scale it up a bit, and let someone else continue parts of it! There's humans for scale guide in the first post.
@thest1076: You have to wait a little bit for someone of the first 11 to finish their tiles before you can claim a tile. Then it needs to be adjacent to a finished tile.

I forgot this was happening and missed the first day lol whoops. Luckily one of my ideas needs water; wanted to see if I can get the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itsukushima_Shrine - gate at Miyajima built. Where do we think would be the best place to start it? Lower right corner in 30 maybe?
Haven't done one of these before so I'm open to suggestions :)

Here's my WIP. The scale is purposefully wrong because if the Statue of Liberty was to scale, it would be roughly 12x larger.
If you can guess what exactly I'm depicting, you get bonus points.

Is 33 taken? I would make something related Zeus.
Edit:
Oh, i see that 25 is taken, need to wait that that tile is made so i can go on 33.

Count me in, i've never joined these before, but would like to try! Is 89 free for the taking? Or 34?
|

@aamatniekss & @ZapWo: all tiles claimed from now on must be claimed alongside (not corner to corner) a finished tile in the main collab image. So right now 29, 30, 44, 45 are free.
Writing for @vrine who claims #29.

Keep on working. I followed Morganna's advice to make a part of hub (or may be it'll become something else). So what do you think about perspective, color? And I like both detailed and non detailed options, which should I stick to?
|
Posted By: Gecimen
Date Posted: 03 November 2023 at 2:19am
@Xmenekai; the perspective of the baba yaga foot is very good. I like the detailed one 10x more than the other.
My only nitpick would be making the large puddle vertically narrower or horizontally wider.
sort of like this

I have added Vrine's and notacharmander's claims now. The remaining tiles around 37 borders other in-progress tiles so not possible to claim those at the moment.
@Xmenekai: Agree with Gecimen, detailed version looks a lot better. The swamp is also starting to look a lot swampier, nice. I would suggest adding some shadow on the ground next to the foot as well.

Updates
- added shadow
- added scales (completely redid them, what do you think? how readably it is? is it too noisy?)
- narrowed middle island
- started to work on feather, don't like it already. Don't know how much detail I can redo, but overall shape looks more or less readable, isn't it?

Current sketch/WIP:
Imgur misaligned it, it was fine when I uploaded I swear! Debating if I should add fish or something to the water. Still tweaking the structure too, I don't do isometric drawings often lol

Uhm, why are people extending outside of the canvas though
I thought it was against the rules?

Usually people are drawing more only to make sure their part is well constructed, and also to project their idea for other collabers, which may follow or not, but at least they have a better understanding what the neighbour had in mind and are able to make a more conscious decision. Those outside parts shown in these WiP posts will not be used when inserted to the main collab image.

For mine: I was sketching outside the canvas but I'd only submit what's inside that bright green border (i.e., what's actually in the tile.) I wanted to start a larger structure and wanted to make sure scale/perspective were okay for the portion within the tile :)
If that's not allowed, someone's welcome to correct me, I'll start over nbd

@Elk your WIP is looking really good, but reminder: The collabs light source is from the right, so the shadows fall on the wrong side right now. I think you could just mirror it and it would be all right though.

WIP!
Started a big pyramid, and there's a guide how to continue it. But, if you don't want to continue the pyramid you could make it crumble in your tile or have a god or mythical monster destroy it or something. Hope everyone's ok with how this looks (and the size)... if not just tell me and I'll do something else!

Oh awesome! Love how you really used the full palette here. And the nipslip is fine, haha! Now someone has to do the tower of Babel too!

Here's my WIP! It's been a hot minute since I last did ISO so I might be rusty. I'll need to make some changes (e.g. he's not sitting on the log properly)but for now this is what I've got.
I've chosen to depict a Vodyanoy, a creature from Russian myth. While I had the option to include my own interpretation (though I might do it anyway), I decided I'd use the one from The Flying Ship instead - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6sv8nO3l4I - he has a song here !
EDIT: Some progress, far from done ofc

Actually can I switch it up to 76 if it's all the same? I think that'll work better with the idea. So 62 is free again. Sorry, just as I started mapping it out it didn't work in that area.

@Eggy: Looks great! What a fun character, hehe. I learnt about Vodyanoy from the game Black Book.
@Reo: Added your claim of #76.

I feel like with every iteration and every your comment, I push myself a bit further asking what if I listen to Mirre and redo the whole composition and add another leg? Or may be part of the house? For most of you it's a piece of cake, for me it's an achievement :D Just hope I didn't broke anything
I'm ready to stop here unless you find some other things to fix

Awesome work everyone!
Tiny requests for the future: When you post your finished tile, you will help the mods a lot if you post also a cropped tile, next to the whole thing (just like Mirre did), so we don't have to edit it, and we can paste it into the collab right away.
The other things that are very helpful are:
adding the tile number to your post, so we already know where to paste it on the image we open in editor, without having to go back to the first page, to check which number was yours, and;
writing the word "done" or something similar on the beginning, or in a very visible place of your post, which will make us sure we will not confuse your finished tile with with any of your wips, (for example if we will have to search for your tile in the future).

Your tile is lovely but since you asked there are some parts that break the isometric perspective, namely the shapes and diagonal lines of your circles. A flat circle should fit into the grid like I showcase to the upper right otherwise something will seem slightly off about your image. Other than that it's a wonderful tile, especially the person in the Kimono.

Fortunately that's an easy fix :)
Thank you Reo for being the ISOguard. Now I looked at the image and I see you are right. I installed it too rapidly.
Will replace the tile later.

We can draw only real historical mythic things, right? If I have thing in mind which is from TV show and never really existed in real world, I cannot take this, right?

@ https://pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=247130&FID=1 - Xmenekai
The topic is mythology not fantasy. All mythology could count as fantasy but not all fantasy would be mythology. In my interpretation Tolkiens life work would count, as he intended to write it as English mythology, and every mythology was written by someone at some point of time - millennium or two shouldn't make a big difference.
If a tv show you have in mind is based on existing myths, legends or folklore I would count it too. Now we could dive deeper and debate about a meta level, of myths set up in a fictional worlds, because they can have their own myths inside, and we could accept those, but it would be much safer to leave such topics for a proper fantasy collab. We had one not so long ago, but we will definitely get back to it sooner or later. The existing mythology of all of the world is so rich and full of wonderful things, that we will not be able to fit all of the things we will want in a single collab. It might be a waste to have even more of them left out.
Those are my thoughts. Gecimen has the decisive voice.
