I recently created an illustration for the horror art book Slashers, contributing my own take on The Fly. You can check out that piece here: https://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/160685.htm - https://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/LA MOSCA

Now I’m working on a new illustration inspired by the film AKIRA (1988). This one will also feature an augmented reality layer, so I’ll be delivering it in multiple layers (just like I did with The Fly).

After several sketches, I’ve locked in the concept: the scene will have three distinct layers,,, a foreground filled with rubble to add depth, a midground featuring Tetsuo with his infected arm in an epic pose, his cape long and tattered, and a background of a post-apocalyptic Neo-Japanese city at sunset. I want to keep cinematic lighting, with subtle yellow bounces on one side and reddish tones on the other.

I haven’t finalized the palette yet. I’ll be posting progress updates and step-by-step shots here ..your feedback is incredibly valuable to me. In particular, I’d love suggestions on palettes or anything you think could elevate the piece. I’m aiming to have the illustration finished by October.

Thanks in advance! I’m looking forward to your critiques and advice.

Cool, I like the first approach where you went for blocking rather then the lineart one. Working in colors early I think can help with stuff like foreground and background. Kinda like oil painting. Hope you finish this.

Thank you so much for your comments, I've already defined the color palette, although I'll probably add or saturate some colors as we go.

Hi there, good progress on this! One feedback i could have is that i feel the arm is lacking a bit of volume? You could maybe fit in your beautifull dark blue in there, to deepen it a bit? Also i don't think i really like how clashing the brown is with the red on the cape, but i'm not sure what to suggest you in this area. Here is a very rough and quick edit for a more visual explanation

anyway, good work and thanks for sharing your progess

Your help is very valuable, thank you so much. I really like how you gave more depth to the cape, and how the arm looks more putrid ,,, I love it! It definitely improves the readability and the sense of volume. Thanks a lot for taking the time to do the edit and share your feedback.

I’ve reached the final version of the illustration.

I first completed a version using a restricted color palette, and from that base I did a second pass where I added lighting, brightened specific areas, and adjusted contrast to improve overall readability. The final piece has now been prepared and exported as a PDF.

The augmented reality video is not produced by me directly, but I’m hoping to have the final footage soon so I can share the complete result here with the animation integrated.

Thanks to everyone who followed the process and shared feedback along the way,,, it was incredibly helpful 🙏
