Although there isn't a spriting tutorial there, go to http://BakaNeko.com - BakaNeko.com  for anatomy. If you want a shading tutorial, go to http://www.natomic.com/hosted/marks/mpat/shading.html - http://www.natomic.com/hosted/marks/mpat/shading.html . Hope it helps!

It would be alot better if the guy had five fingers on each hand, a definable wrist, and a bigger head.

For shading, I set my palette up with a full range from black right through to the lightest colour. This will ensure you have a rich contrast to your sprite.
Always work on the outline before tackling any shading. You don't want to be fiddling too much with the sprite when you have worked on the finer details.

The sprite is looking good so far. The head could be a bit larger and the hair might work better if it was hanging loosly.
There are a few muscle issues but I`m not best to ask me what's exactly wrong on this. All I can suggest here is go look at a few pictures on google. Don't be afraid to copy a pose from a photo as long as you interpret the form in your own artistic way.

Before working on the detail, block in a clear light source. Don't be afraid to make areas in shadow darker than you'd think and lighter in the fully lit areas.

Hope this helps.

for anatomy, whetever you do dont try to copy off of comics or manga (especially manga. thats some fuggered up stuff)
try to find photoreference, or pose yourself.

shading: try to simplify shapes and give those shade. the head a ball, arms as cylinders etc, and add detail later.

i could give you an step by step if you'd like
