YOU tell ME which is best. I personally like the top ones better, but I can't pick just one. Should I do an animation with the face rolling in?

How about just a shine going aroung the edge for the animation?
Top base is nicer. I don't like the fmouth so much :/

I like the top ones as well, and maybe for the animation have the face come rolling up from the bottom, then maybe a shine going around the edges :P

Progress here has been thwarted by lack of a decent gif animator. Microsoft gif animator won't make all of the frames transparent and the other one I have doesn't do timing. Help mebbe?

I use Jasc Animation Shop, it's pretty good. You can just download the trial version... I believe it has no restrictions other than the 30-day trial period.

I forgot to post this and just realized I'd done so. I ended up animating in Photoshop.

I dont like this base.  It looks fine as a ball, but on a smiley it looks like the second chin.  I vote second base with side-ish lightsource

Yeah, I see what you mean about that. I don't really like my execution of the other lightsource though, so I'll redo that and then see what I can do about overlaying the face and animating it.

well in that case, you really need that strong of a reflected light?  cause it seems too much.  It should be really faint, and you put your quarter tone in there O_O.

Also, gray?  why?

i dont think the sekund lytsurs is helping at all. recon it'd look better with just wan lytsurs.
allso hue-control. no wait. hue-alt? oh. hue-shift =3

I'll take those crits into consideration for my next update. http://web.archive.org/web/20060114042942/www.tcp-ip.or.jp/~s-iga/tips/2-3metallic_objects.html - Mozco is the name for the metal tutorial that everyone links to when someone needs help with metal objects.

oh yeah, I've seen that.

Still gray = blah.
Hue = hooray.

A for analogies :)

Hue would be a good idea if this was just a metallic piece, but seeing how it's just supposed to represent the Mozco tutorial and that doesn't mention or display any hue in the metal (other than gold, might try it later), it'll have to sit out for now.

I revamped the base a lot and I think it looks a lot better now; the only issue I see is that the contrast is high enough that a face wouldn't read well anymore.

It may take me a year or two (I hope not), but I'm finishing this dang WIP.

See jalonso's post http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3130 - here . The collab is a bit old and... dusty, but I want to finish the emoticon.

oh.  Well, hm, I definitely think you'll need to go tone down the contrast a bit, like you said for the smiley to smile, even though this new one is certainly shiny!

No, you loose the mirror effect with less contrast. It's the high contrast that make something look shiny and mirrored. Your eye says light doesn't illuminate unevenly  like that so it must be a reflected image.

Less contrast = rougher surface Aluminum TADA...

I added a lot more junk and I'm entertaining the idea of metallic text, but I really don't like what I have now. I also added a few more shapes just for practice. Most I'm happy with but the cube disappoints me. How can I give the front surface a realistic highlight and how can I smoothen the darkest side--I'm hesitant to add another color to the palette.
