Hello again folks.  This train is what I have been working on for a while now.  I am wondering what would be the best way to make this locomotive look its finest?  If anyone has any tips, let me know.  Thanks again and heres a link:

And here's the actual image:

Click the button to include images in your posts.
The image looks like it was a jpg saved again later as a png... it's quite blurry and there seem to be some artifacts. I think you might want to fix that first.

Uh, I dont think so.  I save all my final work as a png file...Always.  Its been 100% png from start to finish.  So I dont know what to say.  Its crystal clear on my end.  I think that I have found the culprit.  For some reason some of my work gets jpg-ied when I post them on photobucket.  Not all but some...Any ideas??

Use .gif format or a different image host.

my http://imagehost.ensellitis.com - image host can do that, as long as the image is under 70kb and is pixel art

mmm...Wont work for me.  I do bigger stuff and right now for what I want, I am looking at 700kb at least.  Thanks anyways!  I will keep looking.  Either that or just show friends, etc the pics on my system.

Well if you saved them as a gif, they'd be smaller. :/

Tried it and man did it look downright terrible.  It also noted that there would be data loss...so I guess png and another host will have to surfice.

Here is what it looks like (san tender) so I think its size related:

If you're using less than 256 colors and a decent gif conversion program, you should have no data loss, artifacts, wasted bytes et cetera.

And what kind of image are you making that needs 700kb? Jesus...

Heh, its a honkin big scene of a German transport train during WWII.  There are at present one locomotive, tender, and two flatcar bearing tanks.  I use Photoshop for compiling...MS Paint for drawing.  Thats my style.  I am using XP...and PS CS2....

Imageshack or Photobucket should be able to cope with 700KB images. The thing is, as Blick said, you need a decent gif conversion program in order to save your images as gif's without loss of quality. I imagine you're using MSPaint to save as gif, which really should never be done.
I believe if you try to upload as bitmap it will convert that to a jpg. Perhaps if the png image is too large it may convert it to a jpg... but generally saving as a png should be fine.

Okay so, they look like pretty decent lines. Get rid of the auto-AA'd text for a start. Then i'd research plenty of reference images for trains such as this, get a feel for how light reflects off of the surfaces and what kind of textures there are, or details..etc.

It seems like quite a large and serious piece to be doing if you're new to pixel art - it may be advisable to start small to build up your abilities before you begin something so large. I can imagine loads of people would find this hard to do, including myself.

Neway, good luck.

you are not impressing me with your attitude so far.  instead of saying all that, and what you said to blueberry, you could have said "they are, pb messed it up."

anyways...  if you are going to make something like this using pixel art, it should all be pixel art.  the text and some of the shading is obviously not pixel art, and it takes away from the peice

I am sorry for my frustion.  It is at present time 100% pixel art... I have not used anything to enhance it.  Ok, the number isnt...I can change that too.    In actual fact, the main reason I signed up, and posted was that I could delve into some creative brains and learn a thing or too.  I stand by the very first question.  Thank you.

ok...  well for one...  you are using way too many colors.  especially with this being so big, you are going to want to keep the color count as low as possible...

right now it is at 64 colors...  you could easily cut that down to as few as a dozen.  here is a quick edit i did...

and yours below it...  not much of a difference...  watch you colors, reuse them, dither them lightly to create shades.  less is more.

Well, I'm no expert, but...I think one question you hafta decide is whether you're creating a technical drawing or an artistic one, and, if both, which of the two aspects is more important to you.
Right now, you've got little to no depth, which is fine for a technical drawing/schematic, but isn't often skipped in artistic representations.
The depth that you're missing (IMHO) is any sort of light sources and shading. The way shadows strike and roll over an object gives the viewer's brain some clue as to the distances of objects relative to other objects. It's also a visual clue as to the angles of planes that make up an objects. It's up to you to pick where your lightsources would look best and how those lights would cast shadows from one element of the train onto another (the shadows of spokes onto the belly of the train, for instance).
Another thing you may want to add is texture, which can suggest material composition, weathering and age.
I'm assuming here (because you've come so far already) that a change in perspective is out.

You have obviously done a lot of homework and painstakingly reproduced the details on this train. Keep up the good work!

Man, thats exactly what I was looking for.  At the moment, I have it hauling two flatcars bearing a Panzer IV and a Tiger I.  I do want to have shadows and such but I feel that at present until I have corrected each and every detail, if I add shadow, it would become harder to edit if I find a mistake.  Any way around that problem?  As for the two styles, I want realistic as it will be in a scene somewhere during the war.  Thanks for the tips.

I wouldnt say I am new to it, just that what I do is drawing on the computer just because I like to draw.  I generally stick to WWII armor.  I am the first to admit my stuff is not on par with most on this site.  Then again I prefere not to compare theirs and mine.  I like WWII German armor and this is a step in another direction.  True it is still German but its a train.  How my learning has expanded is like so.  My earliest version of the Tiger I tank was nothing short but crap.  But at the time I was like "WOW, look mom and dad!"  I still have those moments today but mostly because I am a perfectionist.  So being new to pixel art may be inaccurate, more like new to the concept of shadows, stuff like that.

Another thing about the conversion program choice.  Is not Photoshop CS 2 not good enough?  I save in the png format both in WinXP MS paint and photoshop.  I have have nailed down the problems with Photobucket as my images fall beyond the free user privilages.  This problem will have to be dealt with some other way.  Thanks again for the tips and such.  I am a willing learner(of new ideas).

you could use https://palmer-pursuit.com/ecom/images/ht.jpg - https://palmer-pursuit.com/ecom/images/ht.jpg  as a reference, as you can see its not a perfectly gradiated photoshop, but it does kind of consist of light and darker lines, maybe you can do something with that?

Hey guys, I decided to take a break from the train in order to work on the figures that will be in the scene.  This is my attempt at doing a human body.  Does it look alright, and if not, what do I need to do to fix it?  Thanks!  Oh and by the way, the train looks different now.  ciao!

The figure looks good. I would make the feet just a little bit bigger to balance out the pants a bit. Maybe a bit of shadowing on the pants so that the flaps don't look so flat.

ps: the train is looking good in camo. I don't like the pattern overlaid in a flat like that. I think you really need to break the pattern as it goes over each unit.

Ok, what exactly do you mean by breaking it up?  Also, there is an issue with using the men I have in mind.  The problem is that they are too tall.  There is no way that he could fit inside the train.  How do I draw people for the train, yet not lose alot of detail, without redoing the train?  Thanks again for the tips on the fig.

Ok, that would help me alot.  Thanks a million.  As for the officer/soldiers, I tend to use the same basic human figure for all the different troops.  I just alter each one a bit.  Some shorter, some taller...etc.  I know that some details at the scale is as far as I know impossible to do, such as ears.  Thanks again and keep the tips flowing lol.  I hope that I can bring useful tips to the table one of these days.  Ciao!

I did not find that making your sprite match the scale the train (I love it, btw) limits it from being quite detailed if you want it to be. I would think redrawing the sprites is easier than remaking the train.

What I meant about the camo pattern was that you simply overlaid it flat over the whole train. My example is also placed over it but I shifted the pattern up/down/sideways whenever it touched a different plane on the train. It gives you some depth even without any shading/detailing.

The third view just shows some rough way of adding interest to the flatness of the units. I think treating the train with a lightsource from the top left/right will help you add all the detailing you could ever need. Notice how I used the black outlining to further add depth by coloring the lit areas with the next to darkest color. Your original had the right shading in the red areas but they are just top-down. Using an angle with the same techinique is all you need.

I hope this helps you figure things out. I am sure there are other, even better way to do things. I was only able to show my way of handling it.

ps: I really wanted to color the whole train, lol.

It really is not that much work really. The wheels can be copy/pasted. On the train itself if you make a single panel, it too can be copy/pasted over. All the rivets and small bumps can also be carried over. The only unique areas should only be the shadow and highlight points. Good luck, show us the progress :D

its a nice motif, but there is still the matter of it being just one texture, reducing the depth

this is most noticable on the dark part ont the fender(?) and locomotive... just move the pattern around a bit , according to depth, and you'll be fine

He means that the areas where foreshortening and perspective would move the camo pattern and make the edges not line up don't have the effects of these things and look very flat. Move the pattern whenever the surface it's on is closer or farther from the viewer than the adjacent surface.

Real nice layout. I don't like the brick pattern on the red roofs tho, where it meets the chimmney looks particularly poor. I would think it would also be more interesting is the bricks on the building edges stuck out by at least one pixel so that the sides are not so straight. Same goes for the rear building where the floor divisions just stop at the edge.

Hey there guys, sorry for the long delay.  Work is progressing on the diorama but its a bit big to post on PB.  Until I find a site that is as easy to use and can handle larger file sizes, I will have to post the work in sections.  Here is a couple tanks that will be loads on the train.  They both have camo but I want some C+C on the basic versions for now.  Mainly to do with shadows, etc.  Thanks!

Here is the current version.  I have to link it because of the size.

Is there a size limit on the forum?  When I try to put the pic under my update, its all squashed?  If anyone knows how to get around it, please let me know.  Thanks alot.  Also, feel free to critique my pic (linked in above message).  Take care!

I don't really know anything to say about the train, but I'd suggest adding some depth to the background.  Also, the guy driving the train is orange.  The soldiers are really stiff as well.  Hey, what is this for again?  That's pretty much all I can comment on right now.  You've obviously put a lot of work into it.

Thanks for the advise.  What things do I need to do to add more depth?  The pic is mainly for my enjoyment and others.  Its not for a game or anything.  I just like to draw. As for the soldiers, Ive tried my best and thats what I got lol.  Unless someones out there who can help me out that is... Anyhow, TTYL!

well, in order to make the train pop more, I'd use less saturated colors on the houses in the background, and especially on the mountains.  Those should be very faint, you've defined the edges too much.
Also, you should get rid of the black outlines in the background.  And lower the amount of details - you don't need to outline every single brick, and shingle.  Try to use textures to imply those details, but don't ephasize them all.

And I don't know if this would be possible, but I'd strongly advise you to get rid of the smoke.  But unless you have it on a separate layer it'd be a huge pain in the ass to remove.

I'll try to make an edit of the soldiers for you, but I'm not too great at anatomy myself..

Ok...how would I create the essential component of a steam locomotive without smoke.  It is indeed on a seperate layer so editing isnt hard.  Also, what outlines are you referring to?  Thanks though for your suggestions, they are appreciated!

Yeah, I know smoke is important, but it just doesn't look aesthetically pleasing right now.

And I was talking about the black outlines on the houses in the background, and all the outlines on the details like roof shingles and bricks and such.  You should try to suggest those details with shading and textures rather than outline

I am so behind in skills lol.  Shading is not my strong point.  Anyone out there know of tutorials for buildings textures, shading, etc?  If so, I am here to learn.

I feel stupid.  There doesnt seem to be anything there that I can do just yet...Textures for one, Im not too confident about doing that.  Ive seen samples of what I can do but I have no clue of how to replicate and do it.  If anyone is willing to teach me, I would love it.  Thanks and take care!
