You may remember my old topic where I tried to make a rpg character and a spell. That didn't went that well so asked for help from a friend and he helped me with my spriting skills( I am really thankfull for that).
I currently am working on a srpg and I made a sprite:
I must say it really looks better than my old sprite .
there are some things I want some help with.
-the front foot, my friend says most srpg games have this feet. But in my eyes it looks kind of blockey. Is it just me or should I change it?
-Im having really much trouble with highlighting, it looks too bright or too dark so i could use some tips
-the overall sprite, should there be some improvements?
oh I know he looks kind of fat, but my friend says that will be necessary if you want to dress it up.

Since your sprites will have shoes, the feet are all right in my opinion.
I think they need a neck, the head is too "into" the body.

=>
Update:
i remade the neck, made 2 versions.
Personally i like the 1st one bette because the left arm of the 2nd one looks weird.

I think it looks too much like a front view. Is it gonna be front view, or iso? =)
The rest is pretty good to me, I guess
|

@leath: its going to be an iso game
Update:
 =>
added some highlights and made clothing.
I noticed that many things change when you dress it up.
It doesnt look fat anymore and it looks more iso because his body doenst look like a square anymore.
I tried to make it more iso but my tries looked very bad. Any tips?

I'd nix the black outlines. Make them a dark brown to match the body.

Yes clothing changes things, the base is good. I would add a neck (at least 1pixel high) this will come in handy when you make things like capes and collars and other stuff.
E: These are a good example of iso sprites (made by http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/4072.htm - bradido ) ../files/icons/full/all_sprites.gif"> Notice yours are not really isometric, but fauxmetric, lol

Damn this was hard.
Making my sprites more iso was a hell.
I first spend very much time on the feet, then after an hour of progress I thaught it looked better, then when I matched it with my older sprites there were only a few pixels of difference .
Then I noticed that the legs werent the real problem but the arm.
Update:
1. Made some dark brown outlines.(will work on it further if i get the shape right)
2. neck, it doesnt look very good because of the misplaced right arm.
3. Few tries for a more iso sprites. I could really use some tips here. And I really dont know wich one is best(I think the 1st and the 3th are a little better then the other 2)

Update:
I know it looks like i didnt work on it very much but that isnt. It took me forever to get the pose right.
I really dont know wich pose i should choose, i think one of the last three...
I really appreciate your oppinions

Ok, it has been a LONG time since if worked on this, but i have been quite busy the past few weeks. I'v made some new clothes and while doing that i was getting doubts about some things.
-the feet, they looked fine at first but i got some doubts about them now. Anyone knows whats wrong with them or am i just getting crady .
-the face, it looks alright but when i was looking some closer i kept getting the idea that there was something wrong with it, I just can't discover what...
Help is very appreciated
(if you happen to notice something else, please tell me)

if you must show a part of the face, show an ear. or http://images.google.com/images?svnum=100&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=tourist+looking&btnG=Search - google for some photos of people looking at stuff, like tourist photos, and get an idea of what is visible at that angle... the 4th looks like the one you need

And is it too fast?

the biggest error i can see here that he's not lifting his legs. at all. he just shuffles his feet. make him pull his legs up as he walks for ++realism

An edit with the help I got from pixalation.(the arms and legs were moving in the same direction at the same time)
I'll work on Snaders post now .
EDIT:
I think this improves the 'leg lifting'.
And I did a little edit on the right arm, I thought it didn't move like it should so I changed it.

Thanx for the edit entivore , although I don't really like the edit on the feet I like what you did with the arms.
Feet: As far as I can see you edited 3 things that I don't really like,
1. you positioned the feet different, but now it looks like they are moving more horizontal instead of diagonal
2. you made the legs shorter, but they look too short now..
3. something with the left leg, it's just like it's growing or something
But your leg-edit wasn't for nothing, I edited some parts. You'll see the new sprite below.
For the arms, I like what you did with them, although I'm not going to use it for the walking sprite I will use it if there will be a running sprite because they don't really bend that far when walking. But your edit somehow made me realise the arms need improvement.
I also like changed we arm bending back like you did
Here is the result:

One of the odd things about the souldier is that his butt doesn't really move. I don't know about you, but when I walk my buttcheeks (for lack of a better word) move just as much as my legs do. Maybe more animation int hat area would make it look more realistic.

haha! I dont think those round things are his butt though, to me it looks like part of the top.. metal thing... yeaa. But you do have a point there, I was actually thinking that his thighs should move more, not just everything from the knees down, but wasn't sure enough to actually post it.

shake it
doesn't look that good eh.....
This looks better, but I'm not sure about this...
oh, and it isn't his butt, just like at the new armour posted above it's another part of the armour, look at some pics of armour at google, you'll see what I mean. And this is a small version of the part of armour

It just seems like you've randomly made his buttcheeks move... I think you should think more about what's going on when you're walking. .. I'm not sure how to really explain it... maybe reread leel's post?

It has been a long time since I've updated this on pixeljoint but I finally did it.
At pixelation people made me realise this character wasn't good so I killed it and moved on to another character.
And here is the new character:
And before you say 'OMG THIS IS FREAKING UGLY ', this is a very basic sprite and I want to add more detail to it when the animation is finished.
Well, critisize away (but only critisize the animation, so no comments like 'you should shade the pants some more' because I will do that when the animation is finished'

Kool koog, is this another attempt to get yourself some sprites?
Anyway, time for some updates:
The projectleader has stopped the project and doesn't reply to any mails anymore. I descided to continue working on this sprite so I have something nice for my portfolio. (if you want to know more you can read about it at pixelation)
Now the good news: the people at pixeljoint helped me improve this sprite, the only issue I have now is about the right leg and the colors..
(got home early, thanks mrsprite for posting that)

I think the main problem was indeed the colors.
In my edit I increased the contrast and made the ramps a lot more linear. Your hue and saturation values were all over the place, and I think it looks better with a more predictable trend.

Changed the colors, it looks better, but I'm not sure about the lines though...but maybe they look good ingame, they are on a white bg now..
Maby this is better? Milder inner-lines but the same outlines.

Fo some reson the character looks like its leaning forward.

So, I took a break for a week or two but I'm back on this again
@Vertigo-Zero: Yeah, Adarias showed me some of those on pixelation. He's been a great help there. I took a look on his walking animation but whoa thats a lot of frames, It did help a little though;).
For the armour, there aren't many sprites with armour there.
But I descided to dich the blue armour guy, it didn't look good anyway. So I made a new character.
I kept it simple but I added a scarf so it still is recognisable.
2 versions, I'm having doubts about the arm, should I use the dark outlines or the soft outlines?
edit:
maby I should bend the right arm some more

Usually this question is answered by figuring out the color of your background. Soft outlines work on very low saturated colors (grey or near grey) and dark outlines work well on brighter, saturated colors. In this case, the arm always has the cape behind it, and its a bolder color than the grey surrounding it, so the dark outline looks better.
Great work on the walk anim, thats very nice!
