The controls weren't very responsive. What kind of motion were you using? Direction/speed or some homebrew x+=4 type of stuff? Or was it possibly a custom keyboard handling system that was giving issues? When multiple arrow keys are pressed simultaneously the character will stop moving until both are released and this really messes with the player. Some AI for the crabs and a death anim would have made it nicer as well. Players generally like to be able to predict what's going to happen and act accordingly rather than a random number determining the enemy's action and ultimately the player's fate. It gives them an impression of being in control and if they die it's their fault, not the "stupid game's". The 'press enter' text at the end of the game is strange, too. It doesn't let you leave the screen until it's at a certain position. The character animations looked extremely fast (image_speed=0.1 pls) and they could've used more life; I don't see anything at a glance moving more than a pixel from its original position. Add more motion than you might think necessary in small sprites and increase contrast so they're more visible. The grass was very monotonous and could've used more variation, I thought. It was a bit too busy as well and taking out some detail would've given it a firmer position in the background as well as probably helping with the obvious tiling you have going on.

BTW, you should probably use an icon other than the standard GM one, and same for the loading screen. There are free conversion tools for the icon, and I believe someone prominent at the GMC (don't remember who, haven't been there in years) made a bmp->icon converter for use with GM.

Oh, one last thing: Freewebs sucks. It may be out of your hands, but I have to say that 26 kbps is a speed I would expect on dialup, not my cable interwebs; the download was insanely slow.

One sarcastic comment and an honest question, and you ask that the topic be locked? I'd just like to say that I'd take this as an opportunity to explain what the game has to do with science and try to recieve constructive criticism on the game's presentation, layout, and art. Don't be discouraged if some people don't understand what you're doing; in the back of my head, I was wondering the same thing. Please don't be put off by one post and lose this chance to improve this or future ventures.

well, thank you for the comments, but i dont think i will be changing the game(for historical reason, you know). Most of the glitches i knew about(suck as the 2 buttons at once thing). But all people(*note people that didnt get awards) have been telling me it sucked. I just wanted to see if anyone online likes my first ever game.

and it was the science/technology fair

if you cant take criticism, sarcasm, etc., on things you do...  the only solution is not to post it.

welcome to the internet

this isnt science isnt a critisism. im just saying it sounded like if someone posted a comment on one of your pixels and said "is this supposed to be art?!"

and im not saying this because of MoDs crits. I'm glad he did that. thats what forums are for. but i am THE worst person in the world when it comes to telling if someone is being sarcastic.

then the internet isnt for you.  people are sarcastic, and if you are going to start shouting "lock this" or "delete this" because you cant tell or take a joke, then people are going to start really hating you.

as for the first sentence, i can't make any sense of it...  " this isnt science isnt a critisism"  thats like saying rocks are made of rocks, so i am going to ignore that.

i did catch the last point.  and that point is mute.  you posted a game, that you said was for a "anual science fair" NOT "science/technology fair", those are 2 different things completely.  if i posted a poem in the pixeljoint gallery, then yes, i would expect people would say that.  or if i posted my pixel art on a poetry only site.  you were unclear with what this was for.  if you are going to post something and ask for opinions, BE CLEAR ABOUT IT.  i have stressed this point WAY too many times here and elsewhere.  its like saying "i'm going to die, doctor.  help me!"  how can he help if he doesn't know whats wrong?  i saw nothing but people asking how that belonged in a science fair.  then you got frustrated and asked for a lock, instead of explaining it was also a technology fair, which you neglected to do until further down.

the world isn't the land of milk and honey, where everyone is on prozac, all happy to see you, and no one is an asshole.  most people are assholes in one degree or another, yours truly included.

i sincerely hope you got the point of this post, and i hope others did too, cause frankly i am sick of having to explain to people, nor watch others explain, why people jumped someone's case.

if there was one thing i learned while in the military, it's attention to details.  you need to learn that.

Ok. I understand.

Did anyone have fun(or even try) playing the game?

Guys, give him a f-ing break! He makes a video-game for for a science fair (or whatever kind of fair it was), places third and would like to obtain your opinions about it, and all you can tell him is how it shouldn't be in a science fair?!

The subject of this topic was supposed to be the actual video game. His brief introduction saying that it was for a science fair wasn't supposed to be the theme of the next fifteen posts to come, including a lecture about the internet.

Amen.
Well i will say that it has more pleasant graphics than 99% of the garbage on the GMC. Movement is an issue as MoD stated.

If you really want to make games don't give up, find what you like and do it.
Personally I make games that I like to play. I make shmups because nobody else does outside of Japan.

I see computer games a media of many scientific layers. You have computer systems, psychology and things such as graphics rendering. I hope you provided adequate explanation of these concepts because a game in itself is just a product of these sciences.
