This is the first public draft for a CD cover art for a band. I've been playing for a few weeks to get to this point. This is the front cover, the spine and the back cover. Its dark so that the copy and title stand out. Its Megaman inspired. The sprite is a guy in a ski mask, not a ninja.
The inside of the CD case will be the same scene but on fire and destroyed, very red. anyhoo...

Awesome stuff jal, can't wait for the flame one. I don't have any crits really, you could add another tone to buffer the highlight i guess, if you're not working under any restrictions. Does make it feel more retro though. Anyway, keep it up! :D

Oh my god man.. I mean I can see some rough areas in the draft ;), but it already looks AWESOME..
I remember we discussed a possible collab, but looking at it I'm not even sure if I can keep up with your skill and what you already have here :D Still if you think I can help out with something let me know.

No crits really, except for I'd wish for a little splash of colour? but that can be reserved for the band logo and such

Posted By: jalonso

Yes, many rough areas still. The specs for this is that it remain retro looking and 'pixelly' since its for printing on paper not screen viewing. That's why its sized oddly. It will be scaled to double pixels in final form. As far as coloring I don't have a limit but less colors emphasizes the retro look, for this reason I chose this windows95 color theme.

The figure and building he's standing on is from the start screen from megaman which is the only request made of me by the band.

@Mykola, I will be hitting you up for help and guidance with the little stuff that goes inside, the covers too.

A bit of an update :)

@Twizzler, you can't resize for on on-screen viewing. This is for printing on paper. I am working at 72dpi. Once complete I resize by interpolation the image to the desired size at 300dpi using the all important 'nearest neighbor' feature. I've done it before, its how you print pixelart btw. I have pixelart in the airports of Jamaica at 6 feet across in size and its 100% pixelly goodness ;)

You can't resize pixel art????
I know it's not very nice of a 22 yr old to make a joke of a teenager but man really did you even think for a second when you said that?

I hope I don't have to give you hundreds of examples of real life uses of resized (increased) pixel art.
hopefully you're smart enough to figure out that you're wrong on your own.

Posted By: Mykola
Date Posted: 15 April 2007 at 3:21pm
@jal a splash of color is all I wanted :) gorgeous

also if you maintain an integer increase ratio, you CAN increase PA for on screen viewing losslessly. Losslessly as in with 0% interpolation, and you can always get back to the original.

and PA in the airports of JAMAICA?? photos pls!!!!!!

Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 15 April 2007 at 3:39pm
Yes, but only in units of 2. For print you can go anywhere.

@Myk, About the airport signs. Really boring actually, some resorts in Jamaica in iso, not in my usual style, more simple stuff like this CD art.
But BIG!!!

I said unless its in increments of 2x I'm talking about any increment whatsoever.

@Twizzler, when you resize in Photoshop under 'new size' YOU MUST check 'nearest neighbor' for sharp pixels, the others (bilinear, smooth and bicubic) will distort the pixels.

Not bashing just sharing info.

Because it can go anywhere and because I have to deal with a fiery descrustion version of the same scene;

100% pixel goodness

or Hybrid PA

I actually like the hybrid version, because the purple color adds some funky ambience (and that's what matters to me ultimately, it looks good).

The glow on the spotlight in the hybrid vesion is something I'd definitely get rid of. I really am not fond of effects like that.

in other words, purple ambience = good, white glow = bad. :D

The feedback from the band is:
"The wash on the image seems to imply that something is looming. I like the idea of that."

I will begin throwing the inside covers together while this matter resolves itself. I like 100% pixelly but this does seem like a Hybrid PA project. Hybrid will make the inside fires way easier to illustrate...back to the tablet ;)

that's why I like gradients myself, they're a great way to tranceive all sorts of ambient lighting/atmosphere..

Posted By: jdarling
Date Posted: 17 April 2007 at 6:05am
I like the straight up version myself.  The purple seems out of place in the scene with all of the blues and grays.  Since you said that there is to be a version with the buildings on fire, maybe have the highlight in red or yellow to signify an explosion off-screen some place that the viewer can't see yet.

Posted By: Mykola
Date Posted: 17 April 2007 at 6:09am
@jdarling: if it'd be a standalone scene it'd be better off 100% pixle without the purple.

but as a CD cover, it's better off with the purple.
I've seen what the group asked for stylewise, and believe me the purple is really hepling the style they want.

I personally think neon purple actually adds to the retro/80's feel.

I'm serious it blends in really good with the picture and gives it that ambience.

I'm not that keen on the photoshopped spotlight, hope jal will tank it :D

I felt the purple/pink was extremely out of place, with no real explanation for it being there... its just there, and distracting.

I do however love the green windows and blue tones in the shadow

Great feedback guys, thx.
The band really likes the mood of the gradients. They seem to think that it has the type of lighting seen in a gig. It is first and foremost about the band and its music. The pixelart is I'm afraid not even top3. I will show where the song titles, logo, UPC sysmbol and other stuff goes. All these will be NPA so the gradient is a buffer that ties the BG to the sh*t covering my pixels, lol

@setz, the interior of the CD jewel case will be the same scene in red/magenta/purple. A destruction of this scene with only the Megaman building left standing. That's why I thought the magenta gradient overlay would help with the 'storyline' continuity.

Jalonso, is that the final font/text size and color?  If so, you might want to point out that its very difficult to read when you have color issues or are partially blind :).  Specifically, the song titles and the text below.  Actually, I can't even read the text below and had to struggle with the song titles.

Here is what I think I am reading:
1...Hope Rides Stallone
2...Powerfuneral2!!!!!
3...Unrest in the house of bits
4...8Bit Will of one (or is that a 6?)
5...Venge-Dance?
6...The Stand 1983 (this makes me think its an 8 above, and The looks like lhe)
7...Sons of Fate (the S's are hard)
8...Due Appeggitron 9000

As I said, I can't read anything from there down.

Just my two cents, but I love your scene as a whole and can't wait to see the insides :)

Depending on where they are going to sell the CD, you might also want to mock it with the barcode on the right.  There are some retailers that will put it there weather you want it there or not.

Jal, do they have a website or myspace where i can listen their music..?  and i would change the text a bit more fitting to the bg, and the gradient on the right side less visible... also, reading the font can be quite a hard task... maybe make them just a bit easier to read..?

jal this text is not the final right?? really can't read the back cover. Well I can but it's not really pleasing to the eye :D

I also am not fond of the textual composition on the back right now.. it can be made far more interesting just by playing with font sizes and text placement..

and the fg logo really needs more pizazz.. no need to change the linework just give it a proper finish

Posted By: jalonso

My bad. That is just FPO (for positioning only) text and logos. I will have nothing to do with laying that out. Its just shown here so that when y'all c+c you know what areas will be covered with NPA items. Also so that I don't sweat the pixels in these areas too much...deadlines 9.9. The graphic guy doing that will wait to see the inside art so that it all seems together.

@Varock, links are somewhere higher up on this thread.

So this is the very first step for the inside of the CD case. Just shifted hues and then tweaked manually a bit to keep some blue overcast. It will most likey not end up this way as every update these reds will change till you all say its coo. The yellow lines are kinda where I see the main explosion happening, coming from the lit windows on the front. The rest I imagine on fire or in states of destruction with lots of metal, rebar (sp.) and twisted metals...
...think last scene in Fight Club when Tyler is blowing up buildings from where he is.
Should I destroy every other building but the Megaman one?...hmmm

As you pointed out Jalonso. The buildings, excluding the megaman one, could do with a bit of destroying. And maybe you could have a fire on one to add an extra light source. That is if you aren't on a restricted pallette.

So the band likes the explosion alot so were going with it. This here update shows the main area of destruction caused by the main explosion. I'm wondering how much action to have going on, other than fires here and there :/

a) debris, debris, debris...
b) outer damage...  from an explosion like that, there would be a ton of cracks, warping, and more broken windows.
c) the building on the left would have a nearly caved in roof
d) and yes, some fire and charring :D

lookd good so far.  is this the inside of the cd cover?

@Saint, thx I got what you meant :)
@P_O, I think I have to keep the blue hued pink for the time being. This too will get a gradient (blue) to match the outside cover.
@ I see what you mean but will wait to tone it down. I have to add the guy in the skimask hanging from a rope over the right side (big iso not to scale) plus the gradient may tone it down. I can always bring details back in if needed...I'll bear your c+c in mind for later.
@Shaun, yet, its contrasty still cuz I haven't dithered all that much :)

I will go pixel push this to make it nice and clean now...

There really "clumped together" areas of the fire (where there's a lot of pure white) are too bright and distract me from the buildings.

The pixel one is amazing, but on the hybrid, I think a bit more subtle of a purple tint would be better; right now it looks as if you're seeing the fire through a purple cloud and it doesn't seem to work so well as a way to create a focus for the piece (your intention, I assume).

thanks for defending me madam ;)

So what do y'all say? I based it on a megaman sprite since that's the theme. hence the huge feet and hands. I wonder if its way too big and blocking too much of the BG?

@MoD, as usual you are correct, is this blue gradient better?

Only anime can pull off inaccurate proportions.

I really like the character, except for the weird face mask thing. Also, I think his shirt needs a definite color change. The gradient looks a lot better now, good job.

Hm, in some ways he looks like a giant lying down on the top of the building... not a huge problem though, cus it does look like he's swinging on the rope too. Anyway, awesome, keep it up, i am lazy so i have no proper crits.

ever heard of caricatures? XP I did one last week and I pulled it off

I like it, Jal, now clean it up!

btw, his left wrist is too fat, imo.  Keep the hand as big as it is but the wrist starts too high and looks awkward

Yeah, the blue is a lot better, and the character's great. I think it might be neat to have some red-tinted highlights as if from the fire on him, though, as they'd look awesome and tie him into the rest of the scene.

Tried to edit the eye.
And you're right about the forum doing something to the colours, the blue looks different here...

Posted By: leel
Date Posted: 06 May 2007 at 6:52pm
there's too much detail in the eye...

but overall, this is looking good, the wrist looks better now, guess it was just the colors.  And it does look less like he's a giant on the roof :P  KUTGW.

maybe if you made the rope trail off a little more and get smaller at the end, it would add more perspective and make him not look like a giant.

beastly colors dude.

The luminosity of the flesh is kind of clashing with the colors there.

Thanks for the edit dragonrc. Unfortunately this figure is all waste and seems destined to go into the black hole that is my harddrive. The band does not like it, their thoughts:

hey dude.
sorry about the delay in getting back to you. things have been crazy this weekend. i'll get you a picture of the shoes and ski mask tonight hopefully. i like the updated cover with the shoes and the door ajar. looks great. the inside is also looking good. i talked to some of the guys from the band and they all like the destruction but not the character swinging. the main issue is that it's too cartoon or anime like.

let me preface that comment a little: protomen get lots of love from the anime kids. the anime and gamer crowds tend to overlap a bit and protomen embrace that by playing conventions and stuff like that from time to time, but they worry about blurring the lines between the gaming realm and the rock band thing too much. the band kind of arose out of an idea to tell the megaman/protoman story in a western style a la 'the good the bad and the ugly.'

that being said, this project detours that school of thought a lot since it's an 8 bit interpretation of their record, so it's obviously going to be more about gaming and the whole 80s nintendo nostalgia 8-bit deal. if worst comes to worst, we can just have the inside cover without the guy swinging away or maybe in another pose or further away in the shot. i don't know. what are your thoughts on it? i'm going to talk with them more on this. looking at the image more and more, it comes across more like title screen art, which, in that light, it works for me. mostly the head needs fixing. i'll hook you up with images tonight.

m

Any ideas???

Don't work with 16 year olds?

Well just manually reduce the colors and replace them with their appropriate 8 bit counterparts.
Video game title art as a whole, is not as detailed as scene art.
Perhaps it has too much depth and resembles a painting more than a picture made of reusable elements. Jal I love your work it's top quality, but as a videogame piece it's unconvincing. The old artists had to make reusable tiles and sprites due to their resource space. If you want the videogame look, think reusable sprites thrown on reusable tiles.

Hey buddy, this is a very very well done picture it's a shame that it didn't work for what they wanted. Throw both in the gallery instant favs I suppose.
