Buenas dias a todos
I'm working in a SHMP project from the job section here in PJ.
(now this just a personal project) My task is to create a set of ships for a Vertical SHMUP in wich the player's aircraft evolves/upgrades thanks to powerup items into more bigger-faster-powerful versions during the game. Ship desing stage > > > > > Ship Color Stage > > > > > > > Ammo / Bullet desing Upgrade Sequence Type B - Lvl1->Lvl2
[18Frames] Lvl2->Lvl3
[15 Frames]
here are the first 3 of total of 6 i've decided to make. they're still in their early desing,so what i'm looking for is c+c on the color and shadowing of the ships, and maybe some ideas for future models
for those who know(Pixel_Outlaw i suppose xD), I want to make a set as varied as the ones seen in Raiden Figthers Jet 2k,for example, wich means i will make a modified Spitfire, Spaceships, Mod submarines(yep, a 'fliying' submarine)( )...De antemano muchas gracias ~Metaru

i really like the green ones, designwise, but the 2nd and 3rd stage of the r&b look a bit messy
though on the other hand, the green doesnt look power-upped, but looks like a whole differenc ship.
is the whole background gonna be black? cuz then you could cheat a bit by making some parts transparent, which could be used for shading
allso, why 2 colours? 3 makes more sense, as that would be 2 bit (4 colours, of which one transparent)

Snader, those are just for references.
well, i'll explain a bit how each ship upgrades:
- Green morphs. it's a kind of Bioweapon that mutates. that's why it's green. this ship is the Speedy one.
- Red just adds cannons to its fuse. think in a Revolver or a minigun. by the way, i admit it's desing needs a revision. of course red is the overpowered one.
- and blue is a jet, the standar. it add modules like the VF in robotech series.

You do realize that it is extreamly uncommon to have odd sized sprites right?
Anyway the detail is pretty good. Why are you shading with white as your light color?
Overall I'm impressed.

I like that coloring style for these ships. Red level 2 is weak tho.

>P_O: yeah... as i told to snader, those are just for reference. they haven't sent me the actual sprite size for the game i'm making this for.
>Jal: I know... what R2 does is just add a cannon to each side... any sugestion?

i really like the green ones hehe trust snader to likes the green ones.
I think they look fine although i dont like the blobby look the non-highlighted green wings give off. I also think that breaking the edges of lines would look fine, this means you can use the green, red and blues as AA in some cases (as it is a space game the black background is pretty much set). Edit showing what i mean:
The red one also seems a bit busy this could be a problem when it comes to readability.

These are all awesome metaru!! But I dont see much evolution in the green one... maybe the last one should be a bit thinner...

i just had to post the image because i had to leave... R3 and R2 are the same thing :P
i tried to integrate the cannons to the mian frame, the tail moved back 1px, the wigs made a small rotation clockwise to support the cannons, and i modifed the side twin cannons. Red's idea is to be an small fliying fortress, bully, but in first version it looked like if just added thing below it.
also, i forogot to post
hehe trust snader to likes the green ones.

Here's the reinvented R3 in two ways:
larger, added 2 more cannons, and another set of thrusters. biggest R3 ever. da fliying washing machine.
Not that larger, same two cannons plus two rocket launcers, and a more compact and stabilized version. i like this second version more than the previus one.

I prefer the second R3. It does better showing shadowed/lit faces instead of giving the appearance of red lines on a flat white shape.

Over all, I think fewer outlines and more contrast would make the sprite more readable. Currently the outlines use too much valuable space and don't communicate volume. They're great for 1-bit stuff (more if you count transparency/black), but you should shade to provide form more than rely on outlines when using more colors. Also, the upgraded areas strike me as looking out of place due to the different coloring. Is there some logic behind it?

I would also put more "u" in your version of "shmup"
That said, make your light source just above the ship in front. Make your highest parts lighter. MoD is right. With your current shading it would suggest that you have two light sources on the tips of each wing at the same depth of the body. Your shaded ships look really flat and gangly think about adding depth and if you're going to mirror, use a more central light source for depth.

I too agree. The smaller the sprite the higher the contrast. On here the greys are too grey, add some blue or purple tone to the grey for a better looking pixel.

thanks for your support sire, i though about removing the outlines too, but i wanted some opinions befonero doing anything. also, i'll try to keep the color theme for ships, so a little paint job is the next update.
also, on a side note, the project this was for was cancelled, since the programer ran out of funds:'( but i'll keep working on this as a new idea of making my own version of some popular SHM'U'Ps(thanks for the correction P_O ;)) like Raiden, Ikaruga, Xevious, Slapfight, AeroWings, MUSHA, Einhander, Axelay...

HE VUELTO!
here's an update of Blue. i've totally changed the palette from 7 to 11 colors, shifting from nooby gray to metal blue. i'm not sure of the accomplishement about shadowing of the ship, but i think it looks way more better than before.
again, coments about color choices and shadowing will be really appreciated.
Nos vemos!

It looks bent in half. I think there are too many semi random specs in it. Think about what you are adding rather than filling empty space.

It's looking better. :)
You might consider looking at the DoDonPachi ship for some inspiration. Develope the rear a bit more I'm not usre what the rounded growths are. Try looking at some raiden I or II sprites for some idears. Really the odd numbered with is driving me nuts....

P_O: actually, they are not "exactly" sprites, i'm not plaining to use them on anything to the date. they're jus for graphical purposes. it's just my first "real" pixel project.. like a portfolio or something, wich involves working on the Ships, the backgrounds, title, items, UI, etc.
Alkaline: thanks for the edit... since i'm not changing the desing of the ships, i migth consider using your idea. on the palette, i'll use yours.

these new sprites are a vast improvement. Still I think they kinda look
monocromatic atm. Try to introduce an aditional color(ramp) or try to
reuse the cockpit colors on the ships hull.

One issue you might have once you start using the cockpit colors more is that they blend with the blues, as both have low saturation. Saturating the oranges will fix it.

Looking good.
Red looks a little oversaturated in the mid range for my eyes.
The Type G evolution doesn't really match the others. Level 1 looks much more bulky than its peers. The transition between levels doesn't look so natural (particularly 2 to 3) as each looks quite distinct, whereas R and B are noticeably built-upon.
With Type B the changes between levels are perhaps too subtle.
R looks to have it about perfect to my eyes. Each level is visually similar, but of considerably different bulk.

I need to give a little explanation of how these ships actually are supposed to work in this 'game'. in the begining(mean, the initial plans I had for these ships), each ship has unique atributes(a cliche, I know). Type G is speed based, Type R is power based, and Type B was an average between these two. they were supposed to evolve after a grabbing a specific power up item. While types R and B were suposed to be mechanical aircraft that recieved extra equipment attached to their frames that amplified their attributes, Type G is some sort of Biomechanical weapon that mutates after (*) process. Now, this process of upgrading will be perfomed at the end of an stage in some kind of base/carrier -that i haven't desingned yet- permanently , so each sip will have a diferent role in a major plot that I want to introduce during the game(yes, a shmup with a plot :3) at first I said that i won't modify their desings, but now its evident that i have to unify the desing of the ships in order to make them fit in the same style/scheme. (or else they would look like one of these crappy flash games made of rips from diferent games)

Now i've picked another set of colors for these ships, plus i made some changes to the palettes. i've added another gray in order to add some metal specs to their frames and weapons a la Dodonpachi plus other minus changes to Type R and G's desings. i believe that R now looks less gay, and G looks more agresive(but I still need to give it a more organical look)

You can gain much speed if you can put the same equippement in less space (however this offcourse does not matter in space.. a cube is just as aireodinamic as a rocket in space :p)
ohh this sooo makes me want to pickup my GM skills and program a nice game! but there are no enemys

Well, Type G is supposed to be a fast ship, rather than a powerful one. that's why it gets sharper on each level.

From L1->L2

(15Frames)
and the whole sequence
