Project name:
Lights of Myndell
Brief description:
Lights of Myndell is a point and click adventure game in a
fantasy setting with an emphasis on character, dialogue and puzzles.
Currently we have workable tools and an engine, having just
used them to complete our first (exceedingly short) demo.
Target aim:
To complete a working engine and set of tools for easy
development of point & click adventure games on the NDS, as well as at
least one game.
Further aims once that's done include creating more games in
the same genre, and finding a willing publisher.
Compensation:
A percentage of any eventual profit depending on your
contribution. Though profits are unlikely.
Technology:
Target platform is the Nintendo DS.
The engine has been written in C++ using the PALib library,
the tools are written in DarkBASIC.
We currently use GBAMPs and PassMe carts to run code on the
DS, but plan to move to GBA flashcarts shortly.
We also use the DeSmuME NDS emulator for testing.
Talent needed:
We are in need of pixel in-game artists for the actual
graphics in bitmap format, as well as animations where required. All in game
art will be 2-D. No set style has been decided on for the graphics as of yet,
so that can be decided on with our writer. Graphics are limited to 256 colours
per bitmap.
In game art will include backgrounds, character sprites,
objects, and monster sprites. It may
also include detailed, emotionally expressive portraits - we are undecided on
whether to use pixel art or hand drawn art for these. Interfaces(e.g. the HUD) are already taken
care of.
Team structure:
We have a writer/designer, and a designer/programmer. We
also have several concept artists, and two composers. Team members who have contributed art and who
we have proper information on(i.e. full name) are listed on the website
below. Note that all team members have a
chance to contribute to the game design and idea pool.

Additional Info:
Basic Info
The Lights of Myndell setting is an original fantasy world,
with magic, interesting creatures, and evil demonic beings living just below
the surface. The game itself is set on an island in the middle of a deep ravine
close to the civilization's centre, accessible only by flying ship and presided
over by a tyrannical mayor and his loyal cultist followers.
There will be numerous interweaving plots that the player
can follow as they see fit, handling situations as they please or ignoring them
completely. Our intention is to provide several possible endings to the game,
as well as show the results of the player's actions. We also want to avoid the
dead-ends and out-of-nowhere illogical puzzles that occasionally cropped up in
older point & click games.

As you can see, we're in real need of some decent artwork.
Game Setting
Although the game world is still very flexible, the basic
aspects have been laid out in a fair amount of detail, including the geography,
the background story, and the mechanics.
Rather than an Earth-type world, Myndell is made up of
islands.. with nothing but deep ravines in between. The ravines are said to go right through the
world into space, although this isn't actually true. They're just very, very deep. There are certain areas of Myndell that have
ridiculously large lakes, but the bodies of water are always surrounded by land
on all sides.
Albeit fairly sketchy, the background to Myndell DOES
exist. This background does not factor much
into the game directly, but was important to develop for the sake of the
setting and the mechanics. There is
magic in Myndell; however, rather than being an innate gift or simply there, it
is the waste product of devices deep underground that were originally designed
to produce energy. As such, magic is an
actual substance that must be harnessed and controlled by way of man-made
conduits. The controlling is what
requires talent, but being talented at manipulating magic is no more mysterious
than being talented at playing the piano.
