try to add a colored light source like orange or light blue. Metal isnt grey it reflects all light rays.

anyone mind pointing me towards a good second light source pic. just so I can use as a reference.
I've looked around, coudn't find a good one.
also, not all metals are ultra shinny, I wanted this to look worn & a bit weather beaten.

I like this a lot, but the line tool legs are kind of bugging me. It looks like they're made of the same flexible stuff http://www.insttech.washington.edu/courses/tcss305/05au/homework/3/required_files/bender.gif - Bender's limbs are made of, so the ruler-straightness strikes me as odd.
EDIT: Also, the right (our right) arm is out of perspective.

after all, he's an emo bot.
I think you could find a good reference on this http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/tutorials/light01.htm - light tutorial . on page 3 it speaks about mixed ligthing.

Ha ha Metaru,
When you was posting this I was searching for second light source references on google as well. The one you found was extremely interesting to me as well. All different lightsources are explained and shown. Beautiful source indeed.
I have found more.
Great piece of lighting and shadow writing. With pictures to prove it. OK it is about photos but we can learn from it as well :) http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/tutorials/light01.htm - http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/tutorials/light01.htm
Not much of a show but interesting read: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/phy05/phy05122.htm - http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/phy05/phy05122.htm

Thanks for all the light tuts. very interesting read, not done reading them yet, its making me remember all the stuff I forgot while smoking pot in art class in high school. LOL
I'm just experimenting with the light stuff

The legs have been bothering me as well, but they weren't made using the line tool, altough that would have gone a bit quicker, i'll probably add a curve to them like someone sitting on the ground with his legs(feet) closer to him.
I'll fix the arm as well, altough in the lineart stage they looked perfectly aligned, but when I coloured it, it then seemed out of place, odd.

The feet seem off perspective. The different color light source looks good but you should try to blend it in with the grey with a more saturated form of blue.

Worked on the legs quite a bit, tried a golden yellow second light source(still experimenting)
haven't touched the "left" arm placement yet. eorked on some inner highlights just for fun.

hehe, nice work thus far, you need to blend it a bit better and only use the lightest oranges for the edges.

You really don't have to go so over board with the second lightsource...

I'd spend more time looking at Souly's edit. The shading behind the robot's shoulder and on the sleeve seems really strong.
But you've DEFINITELY come far in this piece and it's looking good.
I personally think you should change it back to blue. It gave it a more of a melancholy quality.

I dunno guys i think his first secondary lightsource update was the best. It needs to fade gradually around the robot, or it will look flat.
Dutrho, don't forget to AA!
I personally feel you should redo the hands, or at least the fingers. The wrists are also terribly thin, i'd make it as wide as his neck or legs.
Good luck.

In keeping with my strict "one thing at a time" rule here's 2 version of the same thing.
I will not forget the aa, nor his left arm placement or the hands/wrists.

Alright no problem.
You need to darken and lower the saturation of the darkest blue. Use the greys nearest to it to blend it with the darkest gray, too (i see you've already done it, but i think you could use one more gray).
Also, you're shading the blues like so:
OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO OOOOO
When you should be shading it like sooo:
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO
OOOOO
I hope that makes sense.. it's quite a big problem.

Here's an edit to show you roughly how I would render this:
(I ran out of time and didn't get to do the legs fully)
In yours, the colours for the arms and legs are extremely similar to the body's colours, so I decided to take them and add them to the body's colour ramp.
On the top of the head and top of the body you've altered the shading on the left. If they're flat, then there should be only one colour (for the diffuse reflection) except if you are adding specular reflections (as I have) and a few other circumstances. Basically the same goes for the inside of the door thing, and the blue highlights; keep the shading in line with the shape of the object, not 'splatted' on.
I've added a few other things which might interest you. Take the outline removal with a pinch of salt though.

tried some aa and edited the 2nd light-source(again). I like your edit but thats definitely not my style. although I like the nics and scratches, I think I'll try that.

Does the indise dither need to be a 50/50 ? ok at 1x, but its such a 'zoomable' pixel and when zoomed the 50/50 looks cheap.

I agree with Jalonso, instead of the dither you should put some gears
or wires in there. You could even go as far and put a lightsource
inside of him, throwing light onto the hatch.

Ok so I messed around with the insides a bit, added some sort of malfunctioning heart valve.

Still some room on the left But I don't know what to put there if anything, tried wires but it looked crappy.

put a piston. you have some frames to animate it. also, he's an emo-bot, how about making him with a disconected heart(I know, its a cliché, but Emos are just a big cliché)

wow i see a lot of progress in this piece well done so far man, it might just be me but the arms and legs of the robot kind of look "rope"-ish

Wow that really works : /
I would color gears using the arms/leg colors. While there maybe the heart can be placed in perspective instead of the 2D flat?
