Here is my current outline for the base of a video game i'm making. It needs to look semi-realistic. I started with the 64 by 128 base and then shrunk it to 32 by 64. I need it to be this size, however I need suggestions on how to make it look better in it's shrunken state, keep in mind realisim is a must.

Nothing will help your goal more than coloring WITHOUT lineart.

I'm just making an outline, I know the proportions are wrong but i don't know how to improve it. I know how to color for the most part.

Maybe the biceps are too big for the chest. The proportions seem fine otherwise : /

I'll fix that, then shade him.
So you all can gawk at my horrible shading.

Take out the lines. Line art is a base to work from, not a paint-by-numbers gig. You can shade so much better if you have the extra space generated by assimilating the outline's area into the sprite. Also, increase contrast by using dark colors next to light colors. Though some have fallen horribly ill, the application of contrast has never killed anyone.

EDIT: Typo.

Seems to me like you've got quite a bit of space in the crotch area...I don't think at that scale your guy should be so well endowed. If it were my sprite I would work on moving the legs a bit closer...not really the whole thing, but some parts of it. Also, I think maybe you should realize you can't always have perfect realism with this small of a scale...I think some things, like smoothing out the large amount of muscle shapes in the arms, would actually make it look more like a real person.

My example, using your lineart. Needs colors, as said before, but I think you get that by now.
