Well, I decided to scrap the piece I started for this weeks challenge because I thought of a much better use for the background - a piece inspired by the amazing artwork of Roger Dean, something I've been wanting to do for a while. I recolored it, and started adding a tower in the background. I wanted some crits.

What you have now is something that is missing some of the key aspects of the references. The (watercolor?) medium Roger Dean uses lends itself to larger objects and more areas of similar color than you have. What I mean is that the water has too much contrast and is drawn differently than I think would have been done by this artist. He would have created a more subtle variation of color to show the texture of water and had fewer very small highlights or shadows like the 1-2 pixel-wide ones you have in places on the water. So I think you might want to do this with a larger palette; if color conservation is a high priority I suggest going monochrome to save a lot of colors, though that may make capturing the style more difficult. You should work to display the effect of light reflected off of water on the apparent coloration of the structures protruding out of the water. Again use a large number of colors to increase smoothness and stop detail from bringing the structure too close to the viewer. Also, the structure is very near the horizon. This is more excusable in the reference where stormy seas can make waves reach above the horizon, but on the calmer one you depict the structure is too far away; it should be much smaller if it's that close to the horizon. So move it downwards a good number of pixels.
 
Good luck improving the piece; the references show a style I'd love to see emulated well here.
