Souly recently posted a very nice Cave Story-esque one in the WIP forum http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4945 - here (near the bottom of the page); studying it and the original should help you a lot. If you're running Windows XP you probably have a screen magnifier accessory for easier viewing of the original, and a shortcut to that magnifier should be located at Start>Programs>Accessories>Accessibility>Magnifier.
