Hey, PJ. I had this thread at Pixelation, but I decided to put it here too because it it very important.

I have co clue what i'm doing.
Well, my friend and I are entering a game making contest, and the subject is winter.[due date: dec. 23rd]
We are going to make a snowball fight game.

But I have no clue how to show walking.
Heres my try:

Looks horrid.

So please, crit the crap out of the animation, and sprite. We want these to be as good as possible.(I need better colors for 1)

EDIT: Anyone have any idea how to draw a pine tree from overhead?
***extra apologies to people who commented on my other threads. I did read your your comments, and used them. This has just gotten in the way..***

Do you think everything should be AAed?

Stuff(CRITCRITCRIT):

Look up^^^ Should I use original, AAed, AAed2, or shaded?

AA it! It'll be on a whit background so its OK. Anyways i makes it look cleaner.
The snowballs kinda look off in the shading aspect of it.

What if you shaded the hat a bit more like this?

It may help if pick a new perspective for your game, because as this seems to be top down it's like they're holding they're chins in the air. I'd suggest kinofa side view but that lets the players move up and down a little to dodge the snowballs. Just a though :P Good luck.

no, we already have a lot planned, and its not an adventure game, its an arcade/multiplayer game.

It's actually pretty common to cheat the top-down perspective when it comes to the head and face. I can't think of any examples at the moment, but I'm sure I've seen it a lot before.

Fair enough. But what I meant was do it like on Streets of Rage, anyone ever play that? Bah I'm getting ahead of myself I should be critting the perspective As I'm not on your team :P
As for the throwing sprite, you may wanna have him tilt his head/body in the direction of his right arm whiles he's throwing it to make it look like he's putting some 'oomph' into it. The way he's throwing at the moment is likely to make the snowball hit the ground (a sort of over the shoulder vertical throw) as you can see if you watch some clips of cricket. Have a look at the way baseball players throw and try to copy that rather as they throw pretty much straight forward rather that trying to bounce the ball on the ground. As you'll see baseball players do more kind of an underarm throw that makes the ball go allot straighter and therefore has a better chance of hitting it's target. I hope that made sense. Tell me if it didn't :P
*Edit
PS. this isn't the Yoyo games Games maker comp is it? In this case it may be worth your while to notice that teams aren't allowed (you mentioned working with a friend?).

I got the oomph thing, but not the throwing at the ground strait ball cricket thing.... Ill fix the head tilt though

And it says one person must submit it, but they may have assistance of a team.

You've got the thumb the wrong way around on the throwing hand! ARG! Why has this not been caught by anyone?!

The left hand throws. The thumb is only on the left side of the left hand if the hand is facing palm up. That means very flexible fingers. Go for it if that's what you're after, but I'd suggest fixing it- putting the thumb on the right side of the left hand.

Plus, the right hand is also backwards until the last frame.

his body should be tilted to the side where the hand holds the snowball. you can't throw anything that way very futher.

He basically means when throwing something a fair distance you can't lean completely forward when ending your throw, or the snowball will just end up on the floor infront of you. He should be leant to the left with his right arm swung around his body and his left elbow pointing backwards.

In my opinion this would work better with smaller sprites, but that's just how i work. Also at a slight angle perhaps, so they're not just a head when idle. Good luck with the project!

Think about when you throw something, you always need to bring your arm around from the side in order to get a good throw. No-one just throws straight over their head like that.

It seems like an awfully long/slow animation for what I'm assuming is esentially "shoot". In an action game I expect to be going PEWPEWPEW rather than PEW... PEW... PEW. Scientifically speaking.

(it's also possible that I'm misinterpreting the thrust of your game entirely, in which case you can ignore this post)

you will get a better effect if you crop out some frames in the actual throwing motion. you can easily add the sense of fast motion by including some motion blur. also some additional pacing might not hurt. let the throw-hand move slightly even more after the ball leaves the hand. 1 frame should be enough to give it that additional pacing it needs.

These all look fine to me. I think showing the BG/tiles these would go on could help in giving you better deatiled c+c. All looks great. Cept for th twisted thumbs and the obvious already stated.

So I made the throwing animation:

and heres some more crap:
before i shade all of these, i need to know if i should keep the colors, and if the basic shading on the anim looks good.

And does anyone know how to do over head walking?

At the end it looks like it needs another frame so it is smoother.
