I was recently told that traditional pixel artists do not practice their work professionally so In rebuttal I wish to see who here has been employed or would consider themselves a "professional" though it is impossible to be a professional artist in skill rather than occupation in my opinion.
I know Jalonso has done some work, who else?

I know many pixel artists that do pixel art professionally, meaning that they have been employed to use their skills in pixel art to produce games and the likes. So it depends on what you mean by "professional" is it the skill or just plain being employed, or is it a combination of being employed because of your skill? lol

This is my dilemma. The term "professional" has become ambiguous. Either meaning is fine.

I think you should add "as a pixel artist" to the title. Because when I read that thought it was employed period.
And no, I've never been paid to pixel.
I remember seeing Atooi's resume, he worked on several SNES and GBA games.

I've been paid for stuff before, however i wouldn't have considered it a proper job or anything. I knew the guy who paid me quite well and stuff. So nah i'm no proff. I do get offered jobs quite often though...

I would say that professional, in pixel art, would be a mix of quality and skill of the art. Cause anyone can get paid for work, while not everyone has the skill to hold the title of professional.

If by "traditional pixel artists" they meant "pixel purists" that may be more-or-less true, as when you're working to output a large quantity to a tight deadline you probably aren't going to be too fussed about using "cheater" tools if it gets the job done.

Basically it was a matter of saying that traditional pixel art is outdated and something that is a relic of the past.

I'm employed fulltime atm... I pixel for the most part, but sometimes I do normal Photoshop work too.
I think it's great, because there are quite a few occasions where I do something that I haven't done before, so I'm constantly learning.
On the Professional-thingie: I think that it's a portion of both; A "professional" Pixel-artist ( as in getting paid ) is nothing without a good amount of skill. No one can be perfect, and there's always some areas where said "professionals" are not as good as in other portions.
The key is, to practice your weak spots, IMO.

Personally, I don't believe that such thing as 'professional pixel artist' ever existed, at least 'near us'(mean, i'm not ignoring all these people working on the gamming industry, i know they weren't magical faeries).
don't you need some kind of education or instruction or experience to be considered as professional? as far as I know, the degree of 'professional' is provided by a certificated institution, like a university for example. honestly, i haven't heard of something like that exept under the obiusly "graphic desing" careers. and maybe http://www.sessions.edu/courses/All_couses/historyofvideogames.asp - this

I am hopefully going to start my first job for a game soon ^^; But I still consider myself a hobby pixeller, this is my first time on working on games. About the proff thing, I think it's mostly what you consider yourself to be. I don't really think anyone else can point out and say that someone is proff. Maybe those magical faeries that work full-time on game corporations
