You can make it shaddowy without having 80% of the pic be black space, by placing a light source somewhere far behind him and another weaker on right near him which would reveal what he looks like to us. If you put brighter more lit-up things in the background then by comparison he will look shadowy ;]

Trippy: An image or sound (piece of music) which makes you feel like you might be on drugs. Like tie-die shirts, music visualizations or artisitic paradoxes like that MC Escher painting.

I don't think going for the easiest path out will help you grow as an artist. C'mon, take some risks and you just might learn something. I would try lighting this one up some and taking the opportunity to learn some more about shading if I were you. ------------- http://pixelmonkey.ensellitis.com">

You have to know the rules before you can break them. For instance, Picasso was extremely good at presenting the human form, but his understanding of it was so solid that he got bored with it. That's why he painted things such as woman weeping which looks extremely freaky. I think a good way to put it is breaking the rules while not even knowing what they are is ignorance.
