This is my first try at doing something like this, so bear with me here.

Yes, I know he doesn't have a head, and his robe is barely shaded. It's still a WIP. Any C+C would be useful. I'm specifically having trouble with his left foot (our right), so any advice towards that would be welcome.
I used HoofFoot's http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/26223.htm - Mr. Onion sprite for a rough guide to basic anatomy. Any C+C would be welcome.

You know he had 3 fingers, right? If you're going for that, it's fine, if not fix it.

Also the fingers should be around the 'spear?', move them one pixel up (hand on top) and one pixel down (hand on bottom).

Good luck with the rest of it.

Yeah, the finger count was on purpose. I find three fingers and a thumb more aesthetically pleasing... that's probably just me though. I've updated with a few changes... c&c please? I'm also toying around with the idea of a  stereotypical Japanese background (Mt. Fuji, etc.). Not sure about that one, though.

Mt. Fuji would make a great background, as always. Especially viewed like this: http://www.sacred-destinations.com/japan/images/fuji/mt-fuji-torii-near-summit-wp.jpg - http://www.sacred-destinations.com/japan/images/fuji/mt-fuji-torii-near-summit-wp.jpg

Excellent idea, xerox. No critique on the non-head part of the piece? (the head is clearly lacking in detail and a little work)

EDIT: I decided to go ahead on the background. It's still in early stages, though.
